August 27, 1910 – February 16, 2014
Fred Southard, formerly of Marlin, passed away at the age of 103, Sunday, February 16, 2014 in Pearland, Texas. He was born on August 27, 1910 in Point, Texas to William R. and Quincy Wilkey Southard.
Fred was a very honorable and dependable husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His family was his first priority and he provided well for them by working at the VA Hospital in Marlin for 30 years. He was a WWII Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines with the 96th Inf. Division. Fred was a member of the First Methodist Church in Marlin and served on the Administrative Board and Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, a 60 year member of the American Legion, and a life time member of the D.A.V. Fred loved fishing for catfish on the Brazos River with his sons and fishing buddies Harry Stallworth, Dutch Sebesta, John Patterson, and Enos Lumpkin.
He is preceded in death by parents, his wife of 70 years, Maxine Black Southard, who he married January 26, 1942 in Colbert, OK., and by his four brothers, Roscoe, Lester, Wilkey, and A.L. Southard.
He is survived by his three sons, Freddie and wife, Laura of Austin, Keith of Pearland, and Mike and wife, Terri of Houston, six grandchildren, Teri, Amy, Derek, Greg, Matthew, and Michael, and five great grandchildren, Mason, Presley, Adalyn, Taylor, and Bella.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. February 20th at Hillcrest Cemetery in Marlin with the Rev. George Lumpkin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
