A short while ago I posted a link to the Australian Speculative Fiction site, to show off a poem that I’d penned to a picture posted over there, called Only the Wind (is free).
I wrote a second poem for the same picture and thought it would be wasteful not to post it here on the blog.
It’s an interesting exercise for me to look back at the imagery that can suggest itself from a static picture. No end to the possibility of stories and contemplations. In this case, the little glimpse of dragon was suggestive. For the previous poem, Only the Wind (is free), it was the sense of abandonment, loneliness, the suggestion of movement through the stillness that caught my attention.
Regardless, I hope you enjoy the preparations of George as he braces for battle.
Addit: I’ve done a little experiment over at my author page, using tables to compare the 2 poems side by side. I would welcome any opinions or discussion. *** It’s over here ***

I know where
this mist
comes from
I know the reek
of lizard
I know the heat
that moves the air
to make a swing squeak
aloud …
so mournful …
my armor snug
my visor low
I have a lance
I heft the weight
of Sword
the balance
in my right hand
trusty
good
my right hand
now
is the time
to bend my knee
to bow my head
my helmet
whisper a prayer
for safety
and an end
to all the things
that are
this lizard
the things that are
all lizards
I know the smoke
that drives away
the innocent
and the naïve
the nostrils of this worm
make for quake
and quiver
but
not me
not I
I am strong
in heart
great in thew
and
I know
where the reptile
lies hiding
end my prayer
I
end my prayer
with murmur
then a shouting
so loud
it is the dragons turn
to whimper
uttered into this foetid air:
my name
is george
yea
yea
MY
NAME
IS GEORGE!
~
-grin- I know that George is supposed to be the good guy, but I’ve always felt a little sorry for the dragon. Like the Dodo, it too is now extinct. 😉

True. I’ve just done a little experiment over on my .com page. Let me know what you think?

There is that!
I’m starting to ponder what sort of post should go into the blog over at . com, as oppose to just poems.
A bit of thoughtfulness may be more appropriate.

I’m no marketing whiz, I’ve proved that more than once, but I do know that talking about your passions, your genuine passions, will bring like minded readers to your blog. You may not sell much as a result, but you will make some bloody good friends.
I’d suggest write about the process, and what motivates you, and….your passions. 🙂

Mindreader!
I’ve been working this morning on a likely article. Thought it might work as a teaser in the next newsletter – an excerpt to encourage folk to come visit the .com.
Tentatively titled: learning to read, learning to listen.
What fun!

Been a long time in the making, Andrea.
Now I get wracked by doubts and annxious because something hasn’t happened for 5 minutes. I get driven to make something else, something new. Hard on the nerves (as it always was, I suppose).

Glad you like George. I really didn’t want to leave him out, just because he wasn’t chosen.

Grinning over here. Was the first thing that occurred to me. An ‘of course’ reaction.
Next, it will be the lengthening snout …
Hmmm, could write something about that …

Was fun to do. Might have done better with some actual knowledge of alligators to go on, but, what we got is what we got.
