A Very Country Christmas by Zara Stonely

christmas review

A Very Country Christmas by Zara Stoneley is a glimpse into the Tippermere universe and family. I’ve never read anything by this author, but when the blurb mentioned horses, hounds, and men in breeches, I was in. Predictably, this novella is set at Christmastime, following two of the main characters, Lottie and Rory, who are dating and just want a quiet Christmas together. Through a few funny mishaps, their quiet time alone turns into a giant party of ten people. Now, I suppose there could be some spoilers, as this novella shows a lot of characters paired off, and I don’t know if their relationships are revealed later on in the series. For this review, I’ll stick to the main characters, though some scenes were told from other character’s perspectives.

First of all, this little novella brings together three of my favorite things: breeches, horses, and humor. I did not realize that the author was from Cheshire,  but I loved reading the British English this book is written in, though their punctuation is a bit odd (but still correct!) to my American eyes. The author also knows what she’s talking about when it comes to horses and riding, something the equestrian in me appreciated very much! And Rory is now one of my new favorite book boyfriends, thanks to him constantly wearing breeches and the gifts he gives Lottie. Pretty sure he peeked at my wish list!

The characters come to life in this book, though as perspectives jump and the book progressed, I found a lot of repetitive thoughts from the main character, Lottie, and then in the next chapter, another character would recall the same memory and expound upon it, but that’s really the only issue I had.

I did love her relationship with Rory, and the texts he would send her; KOW (knickers off, wench), one that had me laughing out loud and wondering how long it would take me to train hubby to use that! They’re both sweet, though I questioned Rory for a minute, and the entire cast of characters seems to be close.

This is a quick , feel-good read, that will get you in the holiday spirits or pick you up in between decorating, present wrapping and cooking.
