Music of Uttam Singh / Music Composer – Uttam Singh – 03
——————————————–

This series on the songs composed by music composer Uttam Singh has been going on for some time. Today I present an ‘epic song’ composed by him from the movie ‘Gadar Ek Premkatha-2001’.

Today we know Uttam Singh as a successful and famous ‘music-composer’, who composed songs for movies like ‘Dil To Paagal Hai’, ‘Gadar Ek Premkatha’ etc. But I doubt how many of us know about his initial struggles and his ‘inspirational story’ of ‘struggles to successes’. (Even I was not aware of his full biographical information till recently).

Uttam Singh’s life journey is a story of sheer hard work, determination, discipline, dedication, perseverance, simplicity and humbleness which became possible because of his father who want to see his son becoming a musician, specifically a ‘western classical violinist’ and later becoming a music composer. Uttam Singh was born in Dehradun on 25th May’1948. His forefathers were from Sargodha (Gujaranwala) now in Pakistan. They come to Dehradun before partition and stayed there and moved to Lucknow later. Theirs’ was a well-educated family.

Everything was going well till Uttam Singh’s father developed an interest in Music. He started taking musical lessons from Ustad Iliyaz Khan who was a principal at Lucknow College. Uttam Singh was around four and half years old then. His father was very fond of music. However Uttam Singh’s grandfather was against this. And so it happened one day that the grandfather of Uttam Singh told his son that if he wish to continue with music he will not be able to live with them. Hearing this Uttam Singh’s father immediately called Uttam Singh’s mother and along with Uttam Singh left home without taking anything and only with the clothes they were wearing. From here they started roaming around the country and staying in ‘Gurudwaras’ where they used to play ‘kirtans’ in ‘Gurudwaras’ and religious functions. Uttam Singh’s mother used to sing. His father was a ‘sitaar’ player and also played other instruments. They used to stay and eat at the ‘Gurudwaras’ and also had some earnings when people appreciated them. Uttam Singh who was a child then started learning music and singing from his father which started with playing on the ‘matkaa’ (earthen pot) and learned ‘tablaa’ further. Travelling to places they came to Ahmedabad in 1960 and from there Uttam Singh’s father took him and his mother to Bombay to one of their friends’ place. Immediately on reaching Bombay his father went away and came back with the information that from the next day Uttam Singh will be joining the classes for learning ‘Western Classical Violin’. It started the ‘musical journey’ of Uttam Singh. He learnt the ‘Western Classical Violin’ from Felix Heredia, Music Director Pyarelal ji’s father Baba Ram Prasad Ji and teacher Menezes.

He worked by playing violin for almost three years. In 1962 he got an opportunity to play violin for a documentary by Mohammad Shafi who was assisting Naushad Saab. From here Naushad Saab picked Uttam Singh to play violin in his team and later gave him a chance of playing solo violin. In 1964 Uttam Singh became member of ‘Cine Music Association’ (CMA). In those days Uttam Singh’s father used to wake him up around 03:30 in the morning and he used to go for running around 7-8 miles and after that his training sessions would continue spreading over thirteen and half hours daily till evening. Uttam Singh started his musical journey as a violinist and making music arrangements for Naushad Saab. In 1965 the famous Qawwals Shankar Shambhu gave him a chance as a music arranger for a Punjabi film. From here when Uttam Singh was just seventeen years he started writing music and becoming a music arranger.
Uttam Singh went on to play violin for some of the famous music directors like Roshan, C. Ramchandra, Madan Mohan, S.D. Burman and R.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Kalyanji-Anandji.

It happened that, when Manoj Kumar was making ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba-1977’ the two songs ‘sainaath tere hazaaron haathh’ and ‘sai baba bolo, sai baba bolo’ were composed by Jagdish Khanna and music arrangement was done by Uttam Singh. Jagdish Khanna was not given credit for these songs separately. However Manoj Kumar was very much impressed with these two compositions and so when he decided to make ‘Painter Babu-1983’ for his brother he asked Uttam-Jagdish to compose the music for this film. Uttam Singh was reluctant as he was contented with whatever he was doing. He seek advice of his father who told him ‘yes, I want to see you as a music composer’ that he decided to go forward after keeping Manoj Kumar waiting for more than a month for taking this decision.

The collaboration of Uttam Singh and Jagdish Khanna continued till 1992 till the making of the movie ‘Teerandaaz-1992’. Jagdish Khanna passed away in 1992. However I guess that this movie was either shelved or not released due to reasons unknown. Though the pair of Uttam-Jagdish didn’t get much success they composed some of the good music for the movies they collaborated for. Meanwhile Uttam Singh had been continuing arranging music and was busy always.

We will continue to have a detailed list of films where music was composed by Uttam Singh-Jagdish Khanna together. Earlier on this blog I have already presented songs composed by them from the movies ‘Painter Babu-1983’ and ‘Waaris-1988’.

We will also be reading about how Uttam Singh got Yash Chopra’s ‘Dil To Paagal Hai’ as an Independent Music Composer and the other movies he composed music after ‘Dil To Paagal Hai’. And we will also be reading about his family and his children in the future posts coming on the blog.

For today I present a song from the movie ‘Gadar Ek Premkatha-2001’. The sequel of this movie has been released last month and has been likened by people all over the country. The today’s song from the ‘Gadar-1’ movie has also had an interesting story behind it which has been told by Uttam Singh himself in an interview to a TV channel.

It so happened that when Uttam Singh was offered ‘Gadar Ek Premkatha’ and the story of this movie, he was asked to come with some tunes for the songs. When Uttam Singh read the story and start working he didn’t come with any tune for almost twenty days and one day when he again put his thoughts as to what a ‘truck driver’ would sing like, he come up the tune for the mukhda of this song with a piece of ‘saarangi’ which he shared with the director, writer, lyricist and other key members of the movie. Uttam Singh also told them that this song will be the theme song of this movie covering all the various incidents in the movie and moving forward with the story of the movie.
When asked about the composition for the ‘antaraas’ he told that it is yet to be worked out and he will do that once this ‘mukhdaa and saarangi’ piece is approved by all. It is then that the lyricist Anand Bakshi came up with ‘ud jaa kaale kaawaan’ and the rest as we know is ‘history’ of what came up as a ‘folk based song’ which is not actually based on a ‘folk song’.

This song is sung by Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Nihar S. In the movie, as we are all aware that, this song happens first in the college campus when the girls asked Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) to sing a song. The second part happens after Tara Singh and Sakina get married and they are blessed with a son. The third part is played when Sakina is kept under house arrest by his parents in Pakistan and Tara Singh with his son went on searching for her. They succeed in meeting each other which is also shown in this part of the song. The final part of this song termed as a ‘victory song’ happens when Tara Singh coming victorious after fighting all odds to get back Sakina and come back to this side of the border along with his son. (And as mentioned by Uttam Singh this is the feeling when the ‘whole brahmaand is blessing and singing for them).

Let us watch, listen and enjoy this epic song which I think is coming at the ‘right time’ on this blog.
I love this song very much and I still remember how twenty two years back when this song was around I used to be humming it always. This song is very soulfully sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik and by Nihar S (the child’s voice I guess).

“Gadar Ek Premkatha-2001” was directed by Anil Sharma for ‘Zee’. It was produced by Nitin Keni. The cast of this movie includes Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Amrish Puri, Lillete Dubey, Vivek Shauq, Utkarsh Sharma, Suresh Oberoi, Madhumalti Kapoor, Tony Mirchandani, Mushtaq Khan, Samar Jaisingh, Pramod Moutho, Kanika Shivpuri, Malavika Shivpuri, Ishrat Ali, Usha Bachani, Rakesh Bedi, Abhay Bhargava, Preeti Bhutani, Dolly Bindra, Mithilesh Chaturvedi, Vikrant Chaturvedi, and many others. Om Puri had given his voice as the narrator for this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Shaktimaan Talwar. Editing of this film was done by Arun Shekhar (A.D. Dhanashekharan-Arun V Narvekar) and Keshav Naidu. ‘Gadar Ek Premkatha’ has seven songs including one four part song, where the lyrics of all songs were written by Anand Bakshi. Music for this movie was composed by Uttam Singh. Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Preeti Uttam, Nihar S., Pt Ajoy Chakraborty, and Parveen Sultana had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Over to the song now…

Avinash ji,

Thanks for the write-up on Uttam Singh.

There is a group of music directors in Hindi films whom I put in the category of ‘highly talented but unlucky’. Uttam Singh comes under this category who has the illustrious company of Jaidev, Lachhiram Tamar, Snehal Bhatkar, Mohammed Shafi, G S Kohli, Ghulam Mohammed, Iqbal Qureshi and many more.

What a coincidence for Udit Narayan! He gets to sing the same song in Gadar 2 as well. Mithoon has done a wonderful job in retaining the the originality of the song of Gadar 1 in Gadar 2. I like both the versions of the song.

Just a bit of info. Don’t know if you are aware that Mithoon is grandson of Pandit Ramprasad Sharma i.e. Pyarelalji’s father i.e. guru of Uttam Singh

Yes, I became aware of this recently or very recently I must say when I read about him.

I like Uttam Singh’s music very much. You have very rightly mentioned about Udit Narayan’s singing in both part 1 & part 2 of “Gadar”.
