Building our consciousness and understanding of systems that lead to our collective liberation is a major part of what VASEN is all about. With our first ever book club, we’ve selected a book that many have used to delve a bit deeper in the history of cooperatives in the South (a hidden history), but also the pivotal role they have played in Black communities’ efforts to realize economic democracy and build community wealth.
Jessica Gordon Nembhard – Collective Courage
We will be meeting monthly on the 1st Thursdays from 2-3:00pm est starting in December. We will explore the wisdom of the book and think about how the culture of cooperation is still very much with us. We’ll discuss how we can use cooperation to strengthen those ties to make communities across Virginia thrive.
