Distiller: Buffalo Trace Distillery

Bourbon: Weller Special Reserve
Region: Frankfort, Kentucky
Price: $29.99
Proof: 90
Age: N/A
The Barrel Cellar Score: 88 Points
Review Date: 10/01/2019
Color: Golden Brown
Nose: Toffee, vanilla, buttered pancakes, and clay
Taste: Burnt sugar, black pepper, oak, and hints of green apple skin (neat). Drop a couple of cubes in and flavors of shortbread, and cinnamon spice rise on the palate. Soft and slightly oily texture.
I enjoyed the bourbon for this review using a Prestige Diamond whiskey glass.
Assessment: The softness in texture of this bourbon is what stands out to me the most. It is satisfying, pleasant, enjoyable and well suited to drink in about any circumstance, watching a game, mowing the lawn, sitting on the porch, or having a bowl of ice cream (yes, really bourbon and ice cream). The special reserve isn’t as complex or tasty as the Weller 12 year, but considering the price and relatively plentiful availability, it is definitely an every-day sort of bourbon. Personally, it won’t replace Buffalo Trace as my go to, but it makes for a very nice change of pace and I try to keep a bottle on my shelf. If you haven’t already, pick one up; it’s a nice bottle of bourbon with a price that makes it easy to share.
WL Weller Special Reserve Bourbon is very good. 88 Points
