Powerful words from Sybrina Fulton: “No prom for Trayvon. No high school graduation for Trayvon. No college for Trayvon. No grandkids coming from Trayvon. All because of a law; a law that has prevented the person who shot and killed my son to be held accountable and to pay for this awful crime.”

Washington Post: Maryland issues insurance rates that are among lowest in U.S.

Maryland insurance officials approved final rates Friday for health plans to be sold in the online marketplace for individuals beginning Oct. 1. The rates offered by nine carriers are among the lowest of the 12 states that have proposed or approved rates for comparison and among the lowest in the D.C. area, according to an analysis by Maryland officials who will be operating the state’s marketplace.

“I didn’t want to be right,” Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says about her prediction that striking a key prong of the Voting Rights Act will lead to a wave of minority voter suppression, “but sadly I am.” In an interview with the Associated Press’ Mark Sherman, Ginsburg reiterated one of the core points of her dissent from the five Republican justices’ voting rights decision — “The notion that because the Voting Rights Act had been so tremendously effective we had to stop it didn’t make any sense to me,” Ginsburg said. “And one really could have predicted what was going to happen” once the law was struck down.

Trayvon’s parents continue to give me courage to keep fighting for justice. My heart aches for them and other parents in their shoes.

Judith, your words speak so much truth to all of us. Thank you so much. When I see Ms. Fulton, I see a very bright light that is deep within but gives her such a glow that it is shining so bright outside of her beautiful soul and it is giving us courage, strength, grace, and love to stand alongside of her on this journey. That light has awaken another giant in our hearts and souls. I take her glowing light and pause with a flickering candle and reach into her space and get more to give my flickering candle a full burst of her strength. Her light gives all of us a radiance to move in her graceful steps on this journey of all of our loss, a child; her precious child.

And if all of us who are touched by her glowing candle will allow our flickering candles to make a new and stronger lit candle to hold up for all of the Trayvons in our nation; then her strength has touched our souls. May our millions of full brightly lit candles now be grounded in her roots to spring forth with branches of human energy to help her and all mothers and families make this journey along side her. I pray that our spirits will be bursting with beautiful lights of:
      strength
      grace
      loving words
      powerful actions
      and
      steady feet that:
      walk to:
save lives of all of our young sons and daughters who:
walk home from school each day
walk to class each day on some high school campus and college campus
walk home from their best friend’s house
walk home from the neighborhood store with their snacks
walk home to share the beautiful news of making a great speech in their high school Language Arts class
walk home with friends from church
just being young people who just want to have an opportunity to be a young person
      in our
America that is trustful, kind, peaceful, fairer, and loving.
That is the candle that we all will shine along with the strength of Ms. Fulton and Mr. Tracy Martin, I pray.HZ

Stunning, stunning from Trayvon’s Mom. He is from a good family and this must be told. They were not put on the stand. His brother is a Congressional Intern, his father is solid and striking in his depth. All of them. Their story must be told and brought into the light. No “thugs” in this loving family. with love.

It is stupendous news that the giant pharmacies, CVS and Walgreen’s are actively participating in Obamacare. I’m guessing many more companies will join in.

Hahahahaha to narrow-minded NFL owners and other organizations that depend on a healthy public to keep up their own revenue streams. Dumbasses. Wonder how many retired NFL players will defy the owners and come out for Obamacare which is so good for our country.

This year is going to be eye-opening, isn’t it?

I am so sorry that Trayvon’s mother has had to stand up and speak out … and it makes us mourn even more with her, because we continue to feel her pain. Hoping her new “life’s work” will see her through, toward a feeling of justice in her heart – somewhere, somehow.

    • July 26, 2013 at 6:48 pm

OMG, what an incredible woman and mother. It’s just astonishing that she can muster the strength to go forward and speak with such a commanding presence. I hope there is a groundswell behind her for CHANGE.

Yes, as well as Tracy Martin. He spoke on the Congressional Caucus panel, as though he’d been delivering remarks before Congress his entire life.

I’m thinking that if the apple indeed doesn’t fall far from the tree, Trayvon could have made an impact in his life, too. We won’t know that part, but we can sit in awe of his parents – that’s for certain.

Chips is good at reminding her Twitter followers of how BLINDINGLY pale the WHPC is:

7: Number of full-time White House correspondents who are African-American or Asian-American, out of 53. That’s 13.2 percent. Figures for other groups weren’t available.
3: Number of African-Americans who have served on the White House Correspondents Association board in its 99-year history.

These facts alone justify getting rid of the WHPC.

I like Bobfr’s idea of shortening the briefings and beaming in questions from reporters around the country. Would help get the President’s message out to the local media.

“Racism flows like a toxic underground river beneath the surface of nearly every public policy we try to change and reform in this country.

Where racism used to shout — with lynching, state-mandated school segregation, bars to the ballot box, police dogs and Jim Crow laws — now it whispers, with a prison-industrial complex that incarcerates more people than any other country in the world, de facto housing segregation, unaffordable health care, horribly inadequate public schools and oppressive voter ID laws.

Bigots have learned to use code words like “fiscal responsibility” and “voter fraud,” when what they really mean is, “we” don’t want to pay higher taxes to support “them,” and “we” don’t want to let “them” vote.”

OK, this piece of BS happened:

    Greenwald to testify before Congress
By DYLAN BYERS | 7/26/13 5:13 PM EDT
The Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald will testify before a bipartisan congressional group next week about the National Security Agency’s surveillance program, he confirmed to POLITICO.

The hearing will take place on Wednesday and comes amid growing congressional concern over the reach of the NSA’s surveillance tactics. It will be headed by Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson.

According to the Guardian’s report, Greenwald will testify via video-link from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The House this week narrowly defeated an amendment by Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) that would have limited the agency’s ability to collect millions of Americans’ phone records.

A recent poll by Pew suggests that 50 percent of Americans approve of the NSA’s surveillance programs, while 44 percent do not.

    ###

    Truly, there are no words.

    • July 26, 2013 at 8:21 pm

Well, don’t get too put out. It’s not an official congressional hearing. It’s a panel chaired by our favorite gasbag Alan Grayson. It has neither subpoena power nor legislative heft.

    • July 26, 2013 at 8:22 pm

There really aren’t any words at all, Meta – this narcissistic bigot is getting all the attention he ever craved, unbelievable. And still not one MSM outlet is examining his agenda, ugly history and long-time problem with the truth.

“….. will testify via video-link from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil”.

      🙄

      • July 26, 2013 at 8:25 pm

The fact that this is happening within the halls of Congress makes me livid. This is a flagrant political move to aggrandize Glenzilla, who is an abolutely ‘effin full blown CREEP. This will revive his lies and his story, which is an insult to all Americans. JUNK.

        • July 26, 2013 at 8:33 pm

I just cling to the hope that this piece of shit will be exposed one day, maybe – just maybe – there’s one decent MSM reporter out there, with the resources, who will delve in to his connections and agenda.

          • July 26, 2013 at 8:34 pm

PS Weird stuff happening with the blog at the moment, I’m getting an error msg when I try to see the front page in Firefox, but it’s working fine in Safari. Odd! Hopefully it’ll be fixed soon.

          • July 26, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Chips, I’m so revolted by our media – by their laziness, their lack of judgment, their lack of skill and their wiling subjugation to the RWNJs – for CASHISH. It’s so beyond my worst nightmare about what could go wrong with our country!! They are making a joke of this democracy!!

            • July 26, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Ah Meta, I share your fury. I always remember Mark Knoller getting in to an argument with someone on Twitter two or three years ago about tax, I don’t know if he was a little ‘tired and emotional’ that night, but he truly revealed himself as someone whose sole concern in life was that he pay as little tax as possible on his obscene salary, and screw education, healthcare, emergency services, etc, etc. Aka: a Republican. I tried to find the tweets some time after because I hadn’t made screenshots of them, but couldn’t, so I’m guessing he deleted them.

But it said it all, really, he is representative of that crew, selfish, cynical ****ers who are so far removed from real people’s lives, it’s untrue.

Each and everyone of them knows about Greenwald’s connections and agenda, but not one of them will expose him because they’re rubbing their hands in glee in the hope that he will damage the President. The deceit is breathtaking. The only truth about Greenwald is coming from people like Bob Cesca and Charles Johnson – we read them, but how many others do?

It’s too much – but, as I said, I still cling to the hope that Greenwald will, one day, be exposed.

How telling! The cowardly Glenn Greenwald is testifying “via video-link from Rio de janeiro, Brazil.” I suppose the equally “cowardly” Edward Snowden will be testifying from Moscow, Russia. And their supporters have the temerity to compare them to Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

More coming apart at the seams:

In the Senate, a letter by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) demanding Obamacare be defunded in a government funding or debt limit bill actually lost signatories, after some senators reportedly dropped off — including Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX). After initially leaking word that the letter had at least 15 signatories, the final version was released Thursday by Lee’s office with 11 GOP signatories — Sens. Lee, Marco Rubio (FL), Ted Cruz (TX), James Risch (ID), Rand Paul (KY), James Inhofe (OK), David Vitter (LA), John Thune (SD), Jeff Chiesa (NJ), Mike Enzi (WY), Deb Fischer (NE), and Chuck Grassley (IA).

Seems like Maine has had enough insanity

A new Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research (D) poll finds Michael Michaud (D) would crush current Gov. Paul LePage (R) by 27% in a two-way race, 61% to 34%.

Michaud also holds a solid lead in a three-way race, 40% to 31%, with Eliot Cutler (I) at 26%.

    That’s good!
