Yogin, this episode is super special to me. This is the work that has brought me right to my edge this year. The yoga of the gunas, the relationship of the gunas to the moon and the return to a liberated state.
What are the gunas?
The gunas (in Yoga & Sankya philosophy) are the constituents from which all things are made. They exist in all things in varying proportions all the time.
The gunas are rajas, tamas and sattva. People have been interpreting and talking about the gunas for ages. Here is my personal experience of them, using the moon and my work process as examples
- Tamas has the potential of the new moon. It seems like nothing is happening, but all potential is vibrating here. This is the space where new ideas germinate.
- Rajas has the energy of the waxing moon. Endeavoring toward fullness. In project management, rajas is where the work is being planned and often while it is actually being created.
- Sattva has the sweetness of the day after the full moon. The release. The moment things click. Usually, the work is still in process, but a critical shift in the process has been reached where things aren’t so frenetic. Where the pace is more peaceful, purposeful rather than maniacal.
Oftentimes, these gunas are set up as a hierarchy (and certainly the sattvic approach is quite often the most comfortable), but our work as yogin is to find ease in each of the gunas. Once we do that, they no longer trigger us in the way they once might have. This, according to the Yoga Sutras, is Kaivalya or liberation.
This is where I have been working for the past year. In feeling into all of the gunas. Getting comfortable in the rajas of finishing a project (several, actually) in the tamas of sitting with space and the potential for anxiety with sattva (it’s real).
We’ll talk more about it soon, but here is just a taste.
LOVE you.
