Surrendering to Grace

Man’s agenda is self-preservation and power grapping.  God’s agenda is redemption for ‘Adam’s helpless race.’  How easy it is to miscalculate redemption’s price tag.  Peter miscalculated the cost to the Messiah to save His people.  He never realized that the Messiah had “to suffer many things” on behalf of the people He came to save.

Simon Peter’s reaction:  “Never, Lord! This shall never happen to you!”
Matthew 16:22 – Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. Never, Lord! he said. This shall never happen to you!
23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.

“Lord, are you going to wash my feet? No, you shall never wash my feet” (John 13:6,8).

Dr. Dennis Johnson reminds us that “surrendering to sheer grace, changes our perception of Christ, ourselves, and others.
When we realize that

(1) the cross is inevitable for the Messiah because

(2) we need washing that can be achieved in no other way than by his suffering as Servant, this discovery dissolves our fictional self-sufficiency and

(3) smashes the barricades of pride and prejudice by which we once excluded those we considered unworthy of friendship with ourselves and our God.”
