STOCKING & TREAT BAG STAND

It’s October! I can officially scream Halloween everything! We have had our décor out since the second week of September and have been busy working on new projects here and there which I will share throughout the month.

Today I am sharing a family stocking stand I made last year, simple to make, no power tools needed as I found the stand at a thrift store. A drill makes putting hooks on the stand easier but a screwdriver will do.

Our kids are grown up, past the Halloween trick or treat stage (even the 13 year old who proclaims he is NOT trick or treathereing but makes it around the block still, making this mama happy) so I have found a creative way to still celebrate, Halloween “stockings” in the form of fabric treat bags.

You can find instructions here on how to make your own fabric bags, for these “stocking” sized ones I make them approximately 9×12 finished.

Start with a wooden quilt stand and paint it in a colour of your choice, I used Rustoleum Ultra Matte Chalk Paint in Charcoal on my stand.

Chalk paint is suppose to cover any surface with no prep but this girl is use to sanding before painting so I did give my stand a quick once over with my palm sander but hand scuffing it with some sandpaper will also help the paint stick.

I gave it 2 coats, I usually do one coat if I am going to distress a project but this needed 2 coats. I then sanded the edges and the surface to get it distressed, wiped the dust off with a damp cloth and coated the stand with Mini Wax Polycrylic in Matte with a brush.

Next I picked up 6 hooks, 4 children, hubz and I ( I need to add 2 more to the ends for our feline and k9 friends stockings/bags) and attached them on. We use this for stockings and treat bags at Halloween, Christmas, and Easter.

Check back later this week for a Throwback Thursday share of a vintage board game we will be playing this month and another creative way I have come up with to still celebrate “trick or treating” with older children and adults.

  1. Great idea, my kids are way pass the age of trick or treating but every year I still go out and find a pumpkin to carve and always have candy to hand out to the little Goblins on Halloween night. I always look forward to that. This is tradition for me, I have been handing out candy and carving pumpkins even before my kids were born.

    1. We have 2 pumpkins ready to carve and we love handing out candy. We had a summer trailer and we had halloween there as well…twice the fun! Love seeing all the little (and big) ones in their costumes. Our lawn is all decked out, will be posting it on here soon
