The Lifter Up of My Head

“But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.” – Psalm 3:3

Hi dear readers! Thank you for showing your support in reading and following my blog. I appreciate you!

We all get discouraged at times. It’s a part of the life cycle with its ebbs and flows. We experience loss of relationships, loss of loved ones, loss of health, and even loss on our jobs. And with the past year, many have experienced such losses and more exponentially. Add to that all the crime, violence, and hatred that we see in this world on a daily basis, it’s enough to bring anyone down in the dumps.

But there is hope for you and for me, still. One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 3. It’s a psalm of David when he was on the run from his son. David exclaims, “But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head” (Psalm 3:3). He found comfort in the Lord being his shield, and David knew that He would lift up his head.

We, too, can find comfort in that. God is a shield for us. That means He protects us from danger and the fiery darts of the enemy, just like a shield protects one’s most important parts in battle. Whatever may come our way, God will be a fence and shield all around us, keeping us from harm. And though we have nothing to glory of for ourselves, we find glory and honor in the Lord.

Lastly, have you ever noticed how when someone is feeling down, they bow their heads? It’s as if they are physically weighed down by their cares and struggles. Notice Psalm 35:14: “I paced about as though he were my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.” It’s a natural response to bow one’s head when filled with sorrow. But God is the One who lifts up our heads. Isn’t that comforting?

No matter what you are going through, no matter how low you’re feeling, no matter how dark it seems, God is there with you. He will turn your sorrow to joy. He will bring you out of darkness into His wonderful light. And He will lift up your head.

It’s as if God is telling us that we won’t be bogged down with sorrow for too long. He wants us to walk with our heads held high like the royalty that His children are. For He has called a royal priesthood and a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9). We’re His special people, and He lovingly reaches down and lifts up our bowed down heads. So whatever you may be going through, be encouraged, the Lord will exalt you in due season.

I take comfort in knowing that the Lord is a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter up of my head. I hope that you will, too.
