Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” Song Review (Is It A Perfect Song??)

Hello, I’m MusiCommentator, and Beyoncé’s undeniable influence has struck again.  Ed Sheeran made a song called “Perfect”, but once Beyoncé hopped on the remix, it went straight to the top of the charts.  So, I decided to do a review on it, and that is what you’re reading right now.

I’ve covered Ed Sheeran on my site before, but if you don’t know who he is, Ed Sheeran is a multi instrumentalist who has taken pop by storm in recent years.  He does not have a specific genre, for his songs have tackled pop, hip hop, folk, and much more.  His newest album, ÷ (Divide), has gotten a lot of acclaim, mainly due to the success of his previous single “Shape Of You”.  This “Perfect” track, though, is the second greatest hit of the album, and as I mentioned before, Beyoncé jumping on the remix did a lot to bring this track to the top.  So, I’m going to take a look at the original version and see if this track is, as the title suggests, perfect.

The song only wastes a few seconds before the first verse starts.

“I found a love for me
Oh darling, just dive right in and follow my lead
Well, I found a girl, beautiful and sweet
Oh, I never knew you were the someone waiting for me
‘Cause we were just kids when we fell in love
Not knowing what it was
I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own
And in your eyes, you’re holding mine”

Usually when I do these reviews I split the verses, choruses, bridges, etc. into pieces and talk about individual lines or set of lines, but for this verse, I could not find a place to split it.  Every line just flows so perfectly (I’ll probably be making a lot of puns like this) with the next that I could not find a good place to divide it.  In the verse, he talks about his love and gives some backstory on how they were young when they fell in love and how they had been through some hardships, which are all great details to add to make the song feel believable.  The first verse also contains my favorite line in the whole song.

“But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own”

Anytime I listened to this song on the radio or in the background of something, this was the line that always stuck out to me.  His flow while saying it stuck it out from the rest and the words themselves are beautiful.  It’s just amazing, or should I say perfect!

The choruses in this song are a bit different than other songs.  They all start off with the same two lines.

“Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song”

But then, each one ends differently.  From the first to the third, I will show them in order.

“When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight”

“When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
I don’t deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight”

“I have faith in what I see
Now I know I have met an angel in person
And she looks perfect
I don’t deserve this
You look perfect tonight”

All these minor changes, in my mind, create a good progression.  From the first and second choruses, we see that Ed likes his woman no matter what she looks like, and the third version goes into a bit of elaboration on why he thinks this way.  It’s a great set up like this, and it is much more powerful than if he kept the same chorus throughout the entire song.

“Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own
We are still kids, but we’re so in love
Fighting against all odds
I know we’ll be alright this time
Darling, just hold my hand
Be my girl, I’ll be your man
I see my future in your eyes”

With this second verse, I tried again to find a good spot to split it up, but I couldn’t.  Every line works so well with the next.  He talks about how they share each others hopes and dreams, and he brings this into saying how he loves her enough to have children with her, even if they are still children themselves in the way they love, and like kids, they’re fighting for love, but he knows they’ll be alright.  Gosh, what a run on sentence.  But, just like the first verse, everything about this verse works.  I love it.

I have yet to talk about Sheeran’s voice, but that is one of the best parts of the song.  His voice brings another emotional level to the track that very few other artists could bring.  He is so passionate that you can tell every word he’s saying is true, and the simple but powerful instrumentals compliment his voice well.

Oh, what is there to not love about this song?  The lyrics are deep, personal, and amazingly enthralling, his voice is emotional, and the instrumentals back the track exquisitely.  When I do these reviews, I always end up leaving out a few lines because there is nothing to talk about in them, but I could not do that with this.  Every line is so essential to the song, which makes it masterfully constructed.

Now, for those who have been reading my reviews for a while, you probably assume that my standards are high when I’m reviewing, and they are.  It is all subjective, of course, but if I were to give a song a five out of five, I must be able to find nothing wrong with it.  That is the point of being a five out of five, there cannot be anything that can exceed it.  I have given songs a 4.5 before, but there has always been one or two aspects of it that bothered me, hindering it from that glorious five.  It’s ironic that the song I’m reviewing is named “Perfect”, because I believe it is so.  I’m giving this song a 5 out of 5!  Do you agree?
