Turkish hackers break into Russian minister’s Instagram account
Nerdun Hacaoğlu – MOSCOW | January/03/2016
A Turkish hacker team broke into a Russian minister’s Instagram account on Jan. 3, as the crisis over Turkey’s Nov. 24 downing of a Russian jet continued to spill online.
The Börteçine Cyber Team hackers claimed responsibility for the attack targetingRussian Communications and Mass Media Minister Nikolai Nikiforov’s Instagram account. The team replaced images shared by Nikiforov with the Turkish flag, a still of the downed Russian Su-24 jet, and a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic.
The account is still under the hackers’ control, and some Russians have joked on social media that it will continue to be so until the end of Russia’s official 10-day New Year holiday.
Turkey has experienced a series of cyberattacks claimed by hacking collective Anonymous since Dec. 14, targeting nearly 400,000 websites with the extension “.tr,” including the online services of a number of Turkish banks. The collective declared cyberwar against Turkey over allegations that Ankara gave support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Turkish hackers block Russian minister’s social network account
Sun Jan 3, 2016 10:11am EST
A social network account of Russia’s communications minister was temporarily blocked on Sunday in a cyberattack carried out by hackers presenting themselves as a Turkish activist group and parading images of a warplane and Turkish flags.
Russia’s ties with Turkey suffered a severe blow when a Turkish fighter shot down a Russian bomber near the Turkish-Syrian border in November, a move described by Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a stab in the back”.
Minister Nikolai Nikiforov’s Instagram account was blocked by “The Börteçine Cyber Team” hackers, according to screenshots of the account, published by Russian and Turkish media and featuring Turkish flags, a portrait of Turkey’s founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and a warplane.
Instagram, where users post their pictures and videos, later restored Nikiforov’s account and his profile photo, but the minister complained that the technical support team had not reacted to the incident for more than nine hours.
Putin said he saw no way of improving ties with Turkey’s leadership, while Moscow imposed economic sanctions on Ankara.
Turkish media reports suggested in late December that Russian hackers could be behind recent cyberattacks on Turkish internet servers handling more than 300,000 websites.
On Dec. 25, Turkish banks reported sporadic disruption to credit card transactions, with local media repeating suggestions that the bombardment of public and financial websites could be coming from Russia, or staged by hacking group Anonymous.

Suspected Turkish Hackers Break Into Russian Minister’s Instagram Account
03.01.2016 | 02:53 (updated 03.01.2016 | 03:14 )
Hackers claiming to be Turkish nationals have broken into Russian Communications and Mass Media Minister Nikolay Nikiforov’s Instagram account early Sunday, posting Turkish flags and references to a Russian jet shot down by Turkey late November.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A Russian Aerospace Forces Su-24 jet conducting anti-terrorist raids over northern Syria was shot down by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet on November 24. The incident sparked a diplomatic row and a series of economic measures imposed on Turkey, including food import bans, employment curbs and reinstating visa regimes.
“Hacked by Bortecine Siber Tim,” read the caption under the first of a series of photographs posted under Nikiforov’s name. Other photographs depicting Turkish flags, national figures and a trail of fire with an open parachute contained similar captions.
The attack comes less than a week after a Turkish hacker group called Ayyildiz announced its readiness to launch cyberattacks on Russian websites. It later claimed to have broken into one of the Anonymous hacktivist group’s websites.
Anonymous has claimed credit for taking down nearly half a million Turkish domains in mid- to late December with large-scale Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The group said it waged an online war against Turkey over its alleged support for the Islamic State jihadist group (Daesh in Arabic).
Ankara has been accused of buying smuggled oil from Daesh, as well as hospitalizing its militants. The group is designated a terrorist organization and is outlawed in Russia.
