Getting a job and balancing your studies isn’t so hard as long as you organise and prioritise your time. However, finding and successfully getting a job can be difficult and very demotivating. I have been in that position and was stressed and worried, especially when you have everything to pay for, it can get on top of you.  

One of the easiest ways to get a job on-campus is through Jobs4Students, which is where I got this job to become a student blogger. There are many more roles listed on the website but make sure you join their mailing list to hear about current vacancies.

Another way to get a job in Manchester is using online job boards like Indeed. Make sure your CV is tailored to the role and you show how you meet the requirements to increase your chances of being invited to interview. Your CV should be updated and have your work experience listed with your most recent job at the top. I also include my availability and references. A LOT of Christmas temp jobs are available at this time of year so be sure to apply to them ASAP.

Bear in mind rejection is always a possibility. I cannot stress this enough, you might think you did a great job with your application, but the employer may have found someone they think is better suited. Obviously you are going to feel upset but there will be other jobs, don’t let it get you down and keep applying.

Manchester Met organises a lot of careers events on-campus where you can meet employers. These events are advertised throughout the University and posted on their social media accounts so be sure to follow them and stay updated.

Getting a part time job alongside your studies can be challenging but it is beneficial to gain skills which can help you in the future. If you keep applying there will be a job for you, for some this may be their first job, others may be more experienced. Everyone is different and your time will come, I wish you all the best!
