Crab Crawl 2018

This past Thursday, we had the opportunity to host 49 High School College Counselors from across the United States (and Puerto Rico!) for the annual Crab Crawl College Tour. These counselors were visiting from California, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, Ohio, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and beyond!

Over the course of one week they toured all eleven private colleges and universities in Maryland:

Monday, April 9

Maryland Institute of Art

Johns Hopkins University

Notre Dame of Maryland University

Tuesday, April 10

Loyola University of Maryland

Stevenson University

Wednesday, April 11

McDaniel College

Mount St. Mary’s University

Hood College

Thursday, April 12

St. John’s College

Washington College

Friday, April 13

Goucher College

Maryland is home to a diverse range of colleges and universities. We have everything from large research universities (like Johns Hopkins) to small liberal arts schools (like Goucher). Some are in the city of Baltimore, and others are on the very rural Eastern Shore of Maryland. But of course, St. John’s in itself is one of a kind, so it’s always fun to introduce people, who know so much about college admissions, to a school with a very different approach to learning.

The tour started with a behind-the-scenes tour of and dinner at Camden Yards (complete with the Oriole Bird!):

We got to start off Thursday morning by walking the counselors up Main Street from the docks downtown. It was a beautiful spring morning, and we could not have asked for better weather. Once the counselors got to campus, they were greeted by the freshman chorus singing Sicut Cervus, an unofficial anthem here at the college, in the newly renovated McDowell Hall. At St. John’s, every student is required to take chorus together as a class during their freshman year. We were fortunate to be able to show the counselors the value of having this requirement. It is a way for the freshman to bond together through a common experience, while also working towards the goal of creating something beautiful. It was inspiring to see.

Afterwards, they headed to the conversation room to hear a welcome from our Director of admissions, and hear student perspectives on St. John’s College (straight from some of our amazing students!). We ended their stop over here at the boathouse, with a catered lunch. Many counselors walked away while excitedly perusing our orange Reading List.

We were happy that these college counselors took time out of their busy schedules to visit Maryland and learn exactly what we do at St. John’s College (on both our Santa Fe and Annapolis campuses), and why we do it.
