I really enjoyed Polly and Spark – The Story of a Parrot and Her Friend Spark the Bull Terrier. It is told in first person by Polly the parrot, and is often extremely hilarious. It’s a really charming book. I am thrilled to share it with you. Here is the cover.
My copy has an inscription on the front. “To Barbara from Ethlyn 12/25/16”. Ethlyn is a pretty name, isn’t it?
It was written by Rosalie G. Mendel, who wrote a slew of stories about animals, the most famous which seems to be My Book of Ten Fishes.
Polly and Spark is not the first in the Spark series, as it has come to be called. I am fairly sure there are three books in the series. It’s kind of hard to tell for sure, without being able to read the books, and just going by names. I believe the order of books is Spark, Spark on the Farm, and Polly and Spark. I want to read all of the books so badly! Maybe one day I will be able to get my hands on the others.
Here is the cover page. This edition was illustrated by D. J. O’Brien.
This edition was published by Whitman Publishing Co. in 1916. The book was originally published in 1914.
Coming up soon, I will be posting the whole story for you to read! I hope you like this book as much as I did. It is delightful, witty, and charming.
You know how you will read a book and are sad to say goodbye to the characters at the end? By the time you are finished with the book, they are your good friends, and you don’t want them to leave. Well, this is one of those books.
Stay tuned for Polly and Spark!
