Bad Muslims? (Guest Post)

Hi Everyone!

Today’s post relates to current events going on in the world currently, as Muslims and Islam are always a hot topic!

Thank you to Diary of a Muslim Student for this wonderful post!

Does not praying make you a bad Muslim? Does not wearing hijab make you bad? Does not growing a beard make you bad? Firstly before I start let me make it clear that I am typing this purely from my personal opinion.

What do you think?

I wanted to talk about this because during my time at university so far I’ve met many people, some who you would not even associate the word Muslim with as well as those who get called the religious guy/girl. I’ve spoken to some people who perhaps aren’t practicing, but generally these people are aware of their Muslim beliefs but have never been encouraged to practice. Thus they mix in the wrong crowds and are taken away from the religion of Islam. But really if we were to speak to these people and remind them of Islam, show them the brotherhood and sisterhood they come back to reality. In fact quick story; my friend was telling me that there’s a girl in the flat opposite who is Muslim yet she has been seen taking part in several haram activities. My friend went and refrained from such activities, making her enquire about his ‘abnormal’ behaviour. It was the first time away from home for her, she had ‘freedom’. There was no one there to remind her to pray, no one to remind her what her real purpose in life is. However, by simply talking to my friend and seeing the Qur’an and prayer mat in his room she was reminded about her home and parents. This made her guilty, and installed the message of Islam back into her.

The point I’m trying to make is, when somebody isn’t practicing don’t blame or attack them for It will only take them away from Islam. Let’s face it, they take part in activities you would never consider, but in context can you blame them? Someone is brought up without being taught Islam, gains freedom and mixes with the wrong people. Sure you can say they’re responsible for their actions but actually they’re just like other non Muslims. It’s our duty to invite them, give dawah to them and bring them closer to their Lord for that is where real pleasure lies. No haram activity can give you the satisfaction and pleasure of being close to the deen.

So let’s try to give dawah to our brothers and sisters in Islam. By the way brothers that’s no excuse to start talking to a girl, advise her once and let a sister talk to her from there on. If somehow you can’t get a sister to help, then make intention to only talk to her for the sake of Allah and make sure it’s not in private and the conversation never leaves the initial purpose. Let’s be real though, both brothers and sisters, we falsely promise ourselves that yes I’m talking about the religion to the opposite gender but in reality we know nothing is going to come off it but simply just fulfilling our own desires.

The Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said, “It is better for you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle than to touch the hand of a woman who is not permissible to you.”

Collected in Tabarani and Bayhaqi; it is saheeh.

The Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whenever a man is alone with a woman the Devil makes a third.”

Hadith – Sahih Bukhari, Book 25, Number 5403, Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-’As

So next time a ‘Muslim’ comes up to you and mocks your beard, don’t attack back but smile and kindly advise if possible. Guess what? If you actually have intention to do that, and contain your anger. In’sha’Allah you will be rewarded! How amazing is our deen.

Sometimes a beard is difficult to grow, in fact I’ve had many difficulties in growing mine which and for personal reasons I can’t grow it entirely. Don’t let reasons like this, which you may not even know allow you to put another Muslim down. Imagine by you putting a brother or sister down that it takes them 100 miles away from the deen. Peak for you on judgement day too be honest lol. Now imagine just by praising a brother/sister in one way brings them close to the deen than you ever will be.

Today we may have emaan, and tomorrow we may lose it.

Let’s strive to be like the prophet sal alahu alayhi wa salam, and by emulating his sunnah we will be giving dawah through our character and personality.

Asalaamu’alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
