Episode 19: ” Saki-san’s Personal Business (National Ver.) 2007″ [Saki-san no Yaboyō (Zenkokuhan) Nisennana]
Summary: It starts off with Nagi watching a horror movie, Maria and Hayate appears. Nagi says it’s the one where you have to show it to others so you won’t be cursed. Hayate notes it looks like a circular curse theme and gets scared about it. Maria and Nagi are amused by this, saying such things don’t really exist, and then the OP theme starts.
One week later, in Wataru’s video store, he notices that Nagi is past her rental due dates. He informs his maid, Saki, about this and asks her to give Nagi a call. Saki sighs. Wataru wonders what’s up with her. Meanwhile, in the Sanzenin mansion, Nagi and Hayate are doing their chores. Hayate notes it’s been one week after watching the horror film and they are still alright. Maria cheerfully tells Hayate “I told you so.” Hayate smiles and thinks to himself that Maria is amazing, she looks so mature and that he bets she doesn’t have anything that she’s bad at. Maria remembers they have watermelons so she invites Hayate to take a break and eat some. Wataru then appears and says he’s there to nag Nagi about the overdue videos. Hayate says they saw the horror movie and Wataru says he remembers that something like a cockroach comes out when you watch the movie. Maria looks worried. Hayate notices and asks if anything’s wrong.
Wataru thinks the question is directed to him and answers that he’s worried about Saki acting strangely recently. He thinks maybe Saki won’t talk to him about it since she thinks he won’t understand since she’s 20 and he’s 13. Hayate notes Saki would have her coming of age party next year. Wataru then remembers that he told Saki that he would buy her a furisode for Saki on her 20th birthday. Apparently, he forgot her birthday. He then asks Hayate if birthdays and coming of age parties are important. Hayate replies he thinks so then proceeds to ask Maria about how her coming of age ceremony was like. Maria’s face looks surprised about this question which prompts Hayate to remember that Maria is only 17 and hasn’t had her coming of age ceremony yet. Maria is a little bit pissed of that Hayate thought for a moment that she had her coming of age ceremony already and reminds him she’s just 17. Hayate is a bit taken aback by Maria’s reaction and notes she suddenly is acting strangely. Maria denies this and laughs it off and excuses herself saying she just remembered she had something to do. This worries Hayate. Wataru decides to ask Saki personally what her problem could be.
Back in Wataru’s house, he asks Saki if she’s been sighing lately because he forgot about his promised birthday present for her. Saki replies nobody seemed remember her birthday but that she doesn’t mind. Wataru feels guilty and goes to see Nagi and asks for a favor. He says he wants to give a furoside to a certain person but he doesn’t have any idea what would look good. Nagi mistakingly thinks that the “certain person” Wataru mentioned is her friend Isumi whom he has a crush on. She gives him a piece of paper and tells him to go buy one at that store but not buy anything too cheap. This prompts Wataru to ask how much an average furoside would cost. Nagi casually replies that he shouldn’t worry since it’s cheaper than buying 2 Ferraris. This surprises Wataru who complains how could one clothing be worth as much as a Ferrri and tells Nagi not to make fun of a commoner’s sense of money. Nagi replies it’s natural to pay that much if one wants to give a woman a present. Wataru asks her how he’s supposed to get that much money. Nagi offers to lend him money and that he can pay her back whenever with no interest.
Meanwhile, Hayate goes to the kitchen and gets blinded by a bright light which appears to have come from the gleaming cleanliness of the kitchen courtesy of Maria. There are also lots of insect/cockroach repellants set around on the floor. Hayate notes there is something wrong with Maria after all. Maria shakily denies this but her odd behavior says otherwise. Hayate bumps into a shelf while wondering what’s going on. The bumping sound makes Maria even more jumpy and causes her to reflexively run into Hayate and hug him in panic. She seems really scared and tearfully blurts out that she’s afraid of “that black rustling creature” which apparently is a cockroach. Hayate blushes and thinks to himself that he didn’y know Maria had this side to her. Maria breaks out of the hug then apologizes to Hayate for losing control of herself and admits she’s really afraid of roaches. Hayate tells her not to worry and that if it appears, he will protect Maria. As if on cue, a giant fighting cockroach then appears in the kitchen. This surprises Maria causing her to cling to Hayate again. Hayate tells her not to worry then picks her up and carries her as they ran away from the roach.
Over to Saki, she is commenting that she didn’t know Wataru was worried about her birthday and notes that compared to that, her grandma didn’t even call her. Narrator cuts in and explains that Kijima Saki’s grandma is the legendary housemaid Kijima Rei who has wandered around the world with Saki while looking for Saki’s mom and dad. A bit of her accomplishments are mentioned but I’ll skip to the part where the narrator says Rei’s life was about to end in the middle of the Sahara Desert when a man, Tachibana Enkyou, appears and saves them Saki and Rei. This man turned out to be Wataru’s dad and this is when Saki met Wataru who was always lonely since his mom didn’t give him much attention. Saki decided that she will repay Enkyou’s kindness by taking care of Wataru and raising him well. Back in the present, Saki wonders if she will be able to raise him as a wonderful man. Back in the Sanzenin mansion, Wataru leaves to buy the furomide while Isumi arrives in a car.
Meanwhile, the giant roach is still pursuing Hayate and Maria. A band of Sanzenin service robots are also hunting the roach and attacks it but it escapes and finds Hayate and Maria who took a bit of rest since Hayate thought the roach lost track of them. The giant roach appears and attacks with a powerful butler kick but as he was attacking, his necklace (which given to him in the previous episode by Nagi’s grandpa) lights up and cancels his aura causing him to lose power on his butler kick and landing with a loud thump on the ground. The roach is about to attack Hayate when a shaking and scared Maria intervenes and stands between the roach and Hayate. She tells the roach that she won’t let it touch Hayate no matter what. The roach is taken aback by this determination and walks away. Maria then falls to her knees with a sigh of relief then runs to Hayate asking if he’s alright. Hayate notes he talked big saying he’d protect Maria but he got protected by Maria instead. Maria blushingly says that’s not true and that Hayate did protect her. This makes Hayate blush and smile. Maria then worries and wonders if the roach might find Nagi and attack her, so the 2 of them proceed to find and defend Nagi.
Meanwhile, inside the mansion, the roach has defeated the bodyguards and is now face to face with Isumi who notes she was surprised she didn’t get lost this time but that it seems there’s a guest. The roach then tries to attack Isumi but she defeats it by showing a strip of paper used for exorcism (I’m not sure if it’s called an ofuda). Hayate and Maria then arrive and sees Isumi who tells them the roach is gone. Nagi then appears asking what the ruckus is about. She then sees Isumi and asks if Wataru gave her a call. Isumi says he didn’t so Nagi wonders if Wataru was just embarrassed.
Back in Wataru’s house, he says that when one buys a present you must use your own money and notes he used his savings but could only afford a yukata. Isumi then appears and sees the yukata, saying that it looks cute. Wataru is greatly surprised by Isumi’s appearance and kindly asks her why she’s there. Isumi replies that Nagi told her that Wataru has something important to tell her and that he had a present for her and should go to his house right away. Isumi wonders if the present for her is the yukata. Wataru blushingly thinks to himself that even though this was an unnecessary favor from Nagi, it is an unexpected opportunity for him as well and that he’ll give the yukata to Isumi and tell her his feelings but then he remembers Saki. Wataru then tells Isumi that he got hold of an extra DVD box of a series Isumi likes and that he’ll give one to her and tells her that the important thing he was to tell her was that the acting of the main character was good and worth a watch. After Isumi left, Saki arrives and sees the yukata. Wataru tells her that it’s a present for her. Saki is a bit surprised about this and wonders why a yukata. Wataru tells her he didn’t have enough money to but a furoside and that he feels bad about forgetting her birthday and thought that was why Saki was a bit sad recently. Apparently, the reason why Saki was worried was only because she was wondering what color she should get for her new cellphone. This leaves Wataru speechless.
Meanwhile, Nagi learns that the present wasn’t for Isumi after all and tells Maria and Hayate about it. Maria asks if Wataru took the money Nagi offered him. Nagi says Wataru didn’t take it since he said it would be pointless unless he buys the present with his own money, so he ended up buying the cheaper yukata instead of a furoside. Nagi then comments that the horror movie creature didn’t appear and tells Hayate and Maria that she was right, it’s all made up. Hayate and Maria looks at each other with a knowing smile and both agree that Nagi is right. Suddenly, they hear fireworks being set off. Nagi decides that they should go out and see it. In the fireworks watching area, Wataru and Saki are also there with Saki wearing her new yukata. Wataru blushingly compliments Saki that she looks good in the yukata. Saki thanks him. The narrator then cuts in and says maybe a new misunderstanding has arisen. Hayate, Nagi and Maria then also arrive in the area with both ladies in yukata. A small cockroach then flies onto Maria’s shoulder. Maria notices this and then suddenly appears frozen.
~ end of episode
My Impression: As usual, there’s a bunch of references. I was only able to identify references to The Ring, Detective Conan and Gundam. It’s a bit of a random episode but I think it’s much better than the last one, although I might be biased in saying this since I like Maria x Hayate. ^_^
I can understand Maria’s fear of “dark rustling creatures” as I’m particularly scared of roaches as well. They just give me the creeps, especially when they start flying about *shudders* . It’s always nice to see Isumi again and I think Isumi and Wataru look cute together. Wataru shows his kind side and we also get a bit of background on Saki.
Hmm… I wonder when we’ll get some background episode on Maria?
Next episode: As per the narrator, “The dragon (Nagi) and hamster (Nishizawa-san aka Hayate’s highschool friend who has a crush on him) go head to head for their loved one with their pride at stake.”
