WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.

Sticking to the Wine of Moldova trend and in line with the fast growing trend for late harvest wines, we’ve decided that the time has come for a very special wine – Cabernet-Sauvignon Late Harvest 2013 from Molda. It is special for two reasons: this is a late harvest wine, that is vinified as a dessert wine, and this is a wine that disappeared from the shelves in an instant, and, to be honest, we’ve had quite a hard time getting one for the review. The other reason for picking this wine would be that, in our opinion, this is exactly how a real late harvest wine should be made.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tasting notes and the wine’s review statistics:

Olfactory

The nose is rich and nuanced, with no signs of wine faults. The first nose is clear and insistent, with notes of ripe sweet fruits, jam and honey: dried apple, quince, strawberry jam, baked apple, honeycomb, white cherry jam, yellow apple, persimmon, fig and mango, all of them twisted into a delightful flavored mix, topped up with a hint of straw grass and wormwood.

Gustatory

The wine is sweet to extra-sweet, with lots of residual sugar, which turns the wine into a sweet fruit syrup. It has light alcohol level, high acidity and smooth tannin, which makes the wine taste jammy, oily and crisp. It has a good balance between all these elements, turning it into a sweet and delicious nectar. The wine has a velvety-like, smooth body with a nuanced zesty accent and a silky texture. This is a delicious, rich and concentrated summer fruits syrup.

Aftertaste

The wine has a medium finish and a balanced aftertaste – it feels thick and extracted on the palate.

chartsThis is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.4 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Last but not least, we were mesmerized by this wine – it’s an amazing dessert wine indeed that can be served as an aperitif or as a dessert drink after the main meal, and it pairs quite well with bitter-sweet gorgonzola, pear and arugula salad. But, the cherry on the cake would be to pair this wine with some honey cloud pancakes – that’s pure heaven’s delight. This is a wine that will leave no prisoners, you either love it or hate it – our appreciation is definitely on the love side. We would also like to highlight that this is a classic late harvest wine – it is hand harvested late into the harvest season, when the grapes are starting to raisinate, which decreases the water level in the berries, leading to a more sugar concentrated grape juice. It’s delicious.
