Brighouse Town vs Campion

It was when I looked at fixtures for December when I decided this was a game of interest. I remember looking at doing Brighouse all the way back when I ticked Ossett Albion, and I can’t remember why I choose Ossett Albion. Looking back now, it’s probably a good thing given Ossett Albion merged with Town. It was initially a Tuesday with little choice tonight, and then there were a few Northern League games added, but I still fancied doing a new ground. It was a similar journey as Friday to Liversedge, but this time, it was a different exit of the M62 roundabout at Cleckheaton.

Brighouse’s St Giles Road home consists of one stand It’s a long stand with plenty of seating, but not much elevation with only two rows. The rest of the ground is hard standing with a little bit of terracing next to the stand. The clubhouse, catering and changing rooms are all behind the goal where you enter. It’s tidy enough.

To the game, and after an even start, Campion took the lead in the 20th minute. Aidan Kirby took aim with a powerful high strike from the edge of the area, and it was too much for the Brighouse goalkeeper to keep out.

Other than the goal, it was a very quiet first half until the 44th minute when Campion almost doubled their lead. A long ball was missed by a Brighouse defender, and it gave Campion a chance. They eventually got a shot away from the right hand side, but it bounced back off the post.

Brighouse’s best chance yet arrived in the 60th minute. A cross from the left was met on the stretch, but it could only be turned wide of the post.

Campion then had a couple of half chances, before a reaction save denied the visitors of a second after a quick turn and volley in the 75th minute.

It could well have been game over when an effort from a great Campion corner was cleared off the line in the 88th minute.

One thing I’ve found with football this season relates to the idea of referees adding more time on. They absolutely are in second halves, but they don’t in first halves, and other than subs, there is regularly no difference in stoppages. They should either add more time to the first half, or less to second halves.

There was a delay in stoppage time when Brighouse’s Jamie Allsop collided with the advertising boards, and Campion saw the game out to book their spot in the third round.

It wasn’t the most memorable game ever, but it was a new tick and I’m now halfway to completing Northern Premier League Division One East.
