And just when you thought I was running out of Corona content, our very own Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister was outed for breaking lockdown rules; sending the U.K into an absolute frenzy! That’s right, Dominic Cummings – the man who helped iron out the COVID-19 lockdown measures – broke the COVID-19 lockdown measures… You. Cannot. Make. This. Up! So whilst most of us have been social distancing, Cummings was distancing himself 260 miles away from his main residence in London to his other home in Durham. The backdrop of the story is that his wife was displaying Coronavirus symptoms and there was a fear that if he also became infected, they’d be unable to take care of their child. As they felt they weren’t able to find local childcare at short notice, they travelled across the country to drop the kid off with their elderly parents whilst they self-isolated… this was deemed as ‘extenuating circumstances’. Imagine having over a month to conjure up a suitable lie to tell the British public yet you come up with that.
Hold on there guys… it gets better! After spending two weeks in Durham, Cummings is given the all clear to return back to work but instead of heading straight back to London, he travels 30 miles to Barnard Castle to “test out (his) eyesight”, ironically it being his wife’s birthday. “I’m unsure if my eyesight has been impaired, perhaps I’ll drive for an hour with my whole family in the car to test out this theory”, no one said, ever. Imagine being unsure your parachute is working correctly so you jump out from a plane to check. Or you believe your drink was spiked so you decide to down it to confirm regardless. We’re all expected to believe this nonsense whilst our Prime Minister stands there, shaking his fists and defending his advisor’s actions. There’s a theory that Cummings is threatening to leak Boris’ nudes unless he cooperates and to be fair, that’s way more believable than his account of the story. Boris’ blind defence of Cummings’ actions only told me that Boris needs his advisor much more than he needs credibility right now.
Following this revelation, a number of Conservative MPs have criticised Cummings’ actions, with a subset calling for him to leave his role. Last time they got this mad was when Diane Abbott was pictured having a cheeky mojito on the underground! I do sometimes think to myself, what scandal could I be caught up in which would force me into resigning from my job. I promise you, driving 260 miles during lockdown won’t be one of those things; I’ve still gotta lock down these bills! And judging by Cummings’ explanation and Boris’ pig-headed support, his job is safe. This is despite Durham Police confirming that Cummings did in fact breach the lockdown laws, but no further action will be taken. No further action will also be taken when reviewing the fines that were issued to people who acted similarly to Cummings lol, these lot are really stoking the flames! I hope Boris knows that whatever rules he wants to implement next will be merely seen as a suggestion to the British public going forward.
But if I’m honest, I thought that lockdown restrictions were a thing of the past! Whilst I’ve been out (during my unlimited exercise time of course *wink wink*), I’ve seen people out gathering in parks and other open spaces – not a care in the world for social distancing. People have become so drained by the virus and the ambiguous rules outlined that I’m sure we’re gonna have a compilation of ‘Cummings Excuses’ at our disposal ready for when we step outside. In fact we’ll now be allowed to congregate outside in groups of up to eight. Boris knows full well that people were flouting the rules way before his speech; he allowed us to do what we were pretty much doing anyways but just claimed the idea. COVID related deaths within the UK is still in the hundreds and we’re expected to ‘Stay Alert’ whilst lockdown is being eased? That ‘Second Wave’ of viruses will not know my name because I’ll be staying my a** at home until further notice. COVID doesn’t discriminate, but hopefully my Cummings face mask arrives in time ‘cos we all know Corona doesn’t apply to him aye!
I’ve attached a link to the World Health Organisation’s advice on Coronavirus, symptoms to be made aware of and how to avoid catching or spreading the virus. It’ll take a collective effort to reduce the spread, let’s all do our collective part.
