SHORTER WAYNE (ST)

Mistico e siderale musicista dal sound alternativo sia nel modale pre-free di Coltrane e sia all’evoluzione di Davis. Già da piccolo, frequentando le prime classi a scuola, ha iniziato a studiare musica e clarinetto per poi passare al sax tenore. Stimolato dal padre ha studiato musica alla New York University. Dal 1956 al 1958 ha lasciato gli studi per il servizio militare durante il quale ha incontrato Horace Silver e con il quale ha collaborato nel 1956. Congedatosi, è entrato nel gruppo di Nat Phipps e poi ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Maynard Ferguson, dove ha incontrato Joe Zawinul, con il quale in seguito darà vita al gruppo storico dei “Weather Report”. Nel novembre del 1959 è entrato nei Jazz Messengers per restarvi sino al 1964 ed è appunto in questo periodo che Wayne ha sviluppato la sua poetica. Nel gruppo dei Messengers ha svolto anche le mansioni di direttore musicale per le sue ottime doti di arrangiatore e compositore. Nell’estate del 1964 è entrato nel gruppo di Miles Davis dove è rimasto sino al 1970. In seguito ha stipulato un contratto con la Blue Note. Nel 1970 con Zawinul, Miroslav Vitous e Jaco Pastorius ha dato vita ai “Weather Report”, gruppo che è rimasto attivo sino al dicembre 1986. Ha inciso anche con Freddie Hubbard nel 1962, con Lee Morgan, con Grachan Moncur III e con Bobby Timmons. Nel corso della sua carriera ha avuto anche collaborazioni al di fuori del jazz, come le incisioni con Joni Mitchell, Pino Daniele, Carlos Santana, Milton Nascimento, il gruppo giapponese Yas-Kaz e gli Steely Dan. Sassofonista splendido specie nel soprano, con il quale ha raggiunto i livelli dei più grandi improvvisatori del jazz. La sua musica è l’incontro del raccoglimento di Coltrane e del lirismo di Davis.

Nel jazz la parola ha tre significati, riferiti allo stile ed allo spettacolo. Il primo: si riferisce a una frase impetuosa nell’assolo di un pianista di stride. L’esempio più famoso lo offre James P.Johnson, nel brano “Carolina Shout”. Titolo che si riferisce probabilmente alle grida di un ballo religioso Afro-Americano, che il pianista interpreta alla lettera. Il secondo si riferisce al cantante di blues che inserisce nelle sue interpretazioni delle grida. Gli esempi sono nelle performances dei due maggiori cantanti di questo genere: Jimmy Rushing e Joe Turner. Il terzo esempio è dato dalle grida dei cori di spirituals e da certe sortite delle sezioni di fiati nelle big band. In parole semplice sono dei richiami modulati secondo un semplice ritmo. Sono una semplice melodia della preistoria del jazz, forme che hanno precorso il Jazz.

Ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a 14 anni ed ha ascoltato molti dischi, specie quelli incisi da Max Roach, Tony Williams e Elvin Jones. Ha debuttato nel 1968 con Santana e con lui ha registrato e ha girato il mondo sino al 1969. Ha anche registrato qualche suo album e diretto un suo gruppo.

Polistrumentista, in grado, con molta disinvoltura, di passare ai diversi stili di musica, cavandosela egregiamente. A diciassette anni suona già con abilità il violino, la chitarra e l’armonica. Ha debuttato nella carriera con Cappy Barra, un gruppo di soli armonicisti, ha lavorato poi con i Major Bowes, un gruppo di vaudeville, dove si è esibito anche come ventriloquo. Ha imparato a suonare anche il sax per poter lavorare nelle orchestre da ballo e sotto le armi ha imparato anche la tromba ed il clarinetto. Ha suonato con Tadd Dameron, con George Shearing nel 1948, Johnny Botwell, con Buddy Rich, Les Elgart, con Lionel Hampton nel 1949, con Charlie Barnet nel 1950, con Chubby Jackson nel 1952, con Gene Krupa nel 1954 e dal 1964 al 1965 ha fatto parte della All Stars di Louis Armstrong. E’ tornato nel 1966 per un breve periodo con Hampton e ha continuato a lavorare freelance a New York. Nel 1980 ha lavorato alle Isole Vergini e in Florida.

Ha studiato prima il sax alto e poi il tenore con Johnn Mehegan e Dave Liebman. Ha esordito in un’orchestra swing a Westport nel Connecticut. Dal 1974 al 1976 ha studiato al New England Conservatory e si è laureato in scienze politiche alla Columbia University. Ha guidato un suo gruppo e nel 1981 ha fatto parte della Widespread Jazz Orchestra, poi del gruppo di Bob Wilder e della Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Nel 1985 ha registrato con il trombettista Jordan Sandke, con Jaki Byard, con Eric Alexander, con Ralph LaLama, con il gruppo “Tenor Triangle”. Ha collaborato con il trio di Mel Rhyne e ha registrato il suo primo disco da leader nel 1990.

Nel 1940 ha ottenuto il suo primo lavoro di un certo rilievo con il cantante Scatt Davis e poi è entrato nella grande orchestra di Les Brown nel 1942, Mentre è sotto le armi ha fatto parte della Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Band dal 1943 1l 1944, con essa ha girato gli Usa e l’Europa, dove ha conosciuto Django Reinhardt con il quale ha inciso un disco nel 1944 e nel 1945 ha registrato con Mel Powell. Tornato in patria ha suonato con Buddy Rich, con Claude Thornhill nel 1949, ha fatto dei tour con Dave Barbour, con Peggy Lee nel 1948 e nel 1950 è ha partecipato con Miles Davis alle famose prime registrazione per la Capitol ”Bird of Cool”. Ha suonato con Lester Young nel 1950, con Lennie Tristano alla Carnegie Hall, con Joe Bushkin. Nel 1951 ha messo su un trio con la cantante Barbara Carroll che nel 1945 aveva sposato e con lei resterà sia come marito che come musicista sino alla morte. Per breve tempo ha fatto parte dei trii di Duke Ellington e di Billy Strayhorn, con i quali ha registrato.

Ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a sette anni e professionalmente a sedici anni. Nel 1963 si è trasferito a Chicago per entrare nel gruppo “Three Souls” con Sonny Cox al sax alto e Kenneth Prince all’organo. Dal 1972 al 1974 è andato in tour con Roland Kirk ed ha partecipato a molti video. Ha collaborato con Sonny Stitt, con Eddie Harris, ha partecipato nel 1971 al Red Sea Jazz Festival. E’ stato attivo nei club di Chicago e all’annuale Chicago Jazz Festival. E’ stato per molto tempo il batterista fisso al Jazz Showcase con il Willie Pickens Trio, con il quale ha anche accompagnato Ari Brown, Ron Carter, Jodie Christian, Charles Davis, Von Freeman, Frank Lacy, Frank Morgan, Nicholas Payton, Claudio Roditi, Ira Sullivan, Malachi Thompson e Cedar Walton.

Dopo aver studiato all’Accademia Internazionale della Musica di Nizza, ha lavorato localmente prima in bande tradizionali e poi in gruppi moderni. Ha continuato a studiare armonia e nel 1967 è arrivato a Parigi ed insieme a Patricio Villaroel ha fondato il “Dharma Quintet”. Ha anche fatto parte del “Matchi Oul”.

Uno dei pionieri dell’ambiente jazzistico torinese. Esercita la professione di avvocato, ed il suo tempo libero la dedica completamente alla sua grande passione il jazz. Facendo parte di una nota e antica famiglia torinese era un conformista. La sua grande passione era Lester Young del quale oltre a voler imitare lo stile musicale, ne imitava anche l’abbigliamento sfoggiando giacche larghissime e cappelli tondi. Ha fatto parte della “Jazz At Kansas City” complesso dilettantistico che ricalcava il jazz basiano.

SICKLER DON DONALD (TP)

All’età di quattro anni ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte e a dieci la tromba. Presto ha organizzato dei gruppi dixieland e delle orchestrine da ballo. Ha studiato alla Gonzaga University di Spokane, laureandosi nel 1967 e si è diplomato in tromba nel 1970 alla Manhattan School of Music. Avrà il primo ingaggio importante nell’orchestra di Gene Roland, poi alla fine del 1970 con Philly Joe Jones e nel 1980 ha fatto parte di “Jone’s Domeronia” della quale è anche l’arrangiatore ed il direttore musicale. Nel 1985 alla morte di Jones ne ha assunta la direzione, con il quale ha registrato sino al 1989. Dal 1987 al 1991 ha guidato anche un suo quartetto con il quale si è esibito a Parigi e nello stesso periodo ha fatto un tour in Giappone con i Messengers di Art Blakey, ha diretto il gruppo “Superblue”. Nel 1989 ha diretto un ottetto a Parigi per un concerto in onore di Charlie Parker. Ha fatto parte della big band di Clifford Jordan, dei gruppi di T.S.Monk, ha diretto una retrospettiva su Gil Evans al Kool Jazz Festival nel 1983, ha collaborato con M. Muldaur nel 1985, ha diretto la Thelonious Monk Reunion Orchestra al Chicago Jazz Festival del 1986 e al Festival du Theatre de Boulogne-Billancourt nel 1987. Ha preso parte agli eventi speciali al Lincoln Center e alla Carnegie Hall. Negli anni ’70 è stato anche il direttore editoriale di E.B.Marks e direttore di produzione della “Big 3 Music Corporation, per la quale ha trascritto le composizioni e gli assoli di Joe Henderson e John Coltrane. Nel 1980 ha fondato la compagnia pubblicitaria “Second Floor Music and Twenty-Eighth Strett Music” e nel 1990 la “Second Floor Music”, distribuita da Hal Leonard. Ottima tromba, ma soprattutto ottimo direttore di orchestra ed arrangiatore. Ha diretto anche le orchestre messe su dalla Blue Note nel 1990 in Giappone e anche quella messa su dalla Verve nel 1994 per il cinquantenario dell’etichetta, dalla quale è stato fatto un video il “Carnegie Hall Salutes The Jazz Masters”.

Ha suonato con Michele Rosewoman, con Henry Threadgill, con Lester Bowie, con il quale ha fatto anche dei tour internazionali. Ha registrato con Oliver Lake nel 1986, con Julius Hemphill nel 1988 e alla fine degli anni ’80 ha avuto una lunga collaborazione con David Murray. E’ stato membro della “Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Ha suonato con Adegoke Steve Colon e con Joseph Jarman. Dalla fine degli anni ’90 si è stabilito a Parigi dove ha registrato con Christian Blazer nel 1995, ha suonato con Bobby Few nel gennaio del 2000 e si è esibito con Sunny Murray al “Studio des Islett” e ha continuato a collaborare con Murray, prendendo parte con lui al Chicago Jazz Festival del 2000. Nel dicembre del 2000 ha codiretto un gruppo con Romano Partesi e ha fatto parte del “Nova Ghost Sestet”, diretto da Ghasen Batamubntu.

Ha suonato nel 1961 con Illinois Jacquet a Los Angeles, con Teddy Edwards, Lionel Hampton, Johnny Griffin, Howard Rumsey, Curtis Amy, Harold Land, Sonny Stitt, Charles Kynard, Buddy Collette. Dopo il servizio militare ha suonato a San Francisco con l’organista Merle Saunders, con John Handy, con il quale nel giugno del 1967 si è esibito al Village Gate di New York. Tornato a Los Angeles ha fatto parte del gruppo di Bobby Hutcherson e Harold Land, ha suonato con Phineas Newborn, con O.C.Smith, Blue Mitchell, con Kai Winding a Phoenix in Arizona. Ha lavorato a Johannesburg, nel Sud Africa dove ha registrato con Abdullah Ibrahim, poi nel 1980 in Europa con Abbey Lincoln e in USA ed in Canada con Jon Hendricks dal 1982 al 1983. Ha fatto parte della tournée europea dello show “Sophisticated Lady”nel 1988 e ha registrato in Olanda con il sassofonista Joe van Enkuisen. Nel 1989 ha diretto un suo gruppo a Amsterdam, dove ha registrato anche con Benny Bailey. Ha fatto tournée con Johnny Griffin, Tete Montoliu, Steve Grossman, Tom Harrell, Walter Bishop Jr., Ralph Sutton, Ranee Lee, Hank Jones, Oliver Jones. E’ cresciuto a Racine nel Wisconsin ed ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte all’età di sette anni. Mentre frequentava l’Università del Wisconsin ha fatto parte del gruppo di blues rock “The Ardells” e ha collaborato anche con le prime incisioni della “Steve Miller Band”, nella quale ha scritto i testi delle canzoni. Nel 1969 si è trasferito a Londra, dove ha studiato all’Università del Sussex e ha suonato e registrato con Eric Clapton, con Peter Frampton, con i Rolling Stones e Jessie Davis. Nel 1971 è tornato in patria e si è stabilito a Los Angeles dove ha inciso il suo primo disco ”Feel Your Groove” per la Capitol. Ha insegnato l’arte della comunicazione all’università del Wisconsin, ha inciso con Woody Shaw, con Blue Mitchel e con Tony Williams. Nel 1977 ha lavorato nello show televisivo “Sound Stage”, poi al programma “Jazz Alive” per la National Public Radio ed al programma radiofonico “Sidram on Record”. Ha diretto anche un programma di critica musicale per la NPR il “All Things Considered”. Nel 1979 ha registrato insieme a Lee Ritenour, con Joe Henderson e con Steve Gadd. Nel 1980 è diventato produttore di video-dischi, ha registrato con Richie Cole, con Richard Davis, con Phil Woods, con Eddie Gomez e con Peter Erskine. Nel giugno del 1988 ha presentato il programma televisivo “New Vision”. Cantante del genere vocalist ed anche bravo pianista, ha creato nel contesto del jazz rock e della fusion una particolare forma di ”Sprechgesang”. Anche ottimo presentatore, oltre che compositore e produttore. Nel 1990 ha fondato l’etichetta “Go Jazz” che ha pubblicato con la editrice Mesa Blueroom album di Bob Malach, Georgie Fame e Ricky Peterson. Ha presentato a Chicago il programma “A Jazzy Chanukah” e ha diretto un gruppo con Eddie Daniels, Gil Goldstein e Steve Kahn. E’ stato uno di quei jazzisti a cimentarsi con la musica Klezmer, della quale ha inciso anche un album nel 1993. Negli ultimi anni fa spesso parte della sua scuderia Gege Telesforo, vocalist che si è ormai affermato in campo internazionale.

Musicista della new age, cresciuto a Eugene nell’Oregon. Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a otto anni e a 12 anni fa parte come cantante e chitarrista ad un gruppo rock. Nel 1976 si è laureato in Composizione Musicale alla Università dell’Oregon ed ha iniziato a registrare le sue composizioni con la sua orchestra. Ha conseguito una laurea in Jazz e ha studiato pianoforte a Boston con Madame Chaloff, madre di Serge. Nel 1980 ha registrato per la prima volta come leader. Nel 1983 si è trasferito a Los Angeles per lavorare nel cinema e per la televisione.

Cresciuto musicalmente nel “country ’n’ western” è entrato nel 1973 nel gruppo vocale dei “Manhattan Transfer”. Vocalese molto versatile, eclettico, sempre pronto al recupero di singoli aspetti del canto tradizionale e sempre attento alla scena contemporanea. Voce dalla notevole varietà dinamica, purtroppo l‘influsso di quel folk metropolitano da cui proviene non gli ha consentito di essere una voce importante nel jazz.

Insegnante di flauto classico alla Rutgers University. Suona anche il sax alto ed il sax tenore, i suoi punti di riferimento è Hubert Laws e James Moody. Ha fatto parte dello “Small World Ensemble” gruppo nel quale ha conosciuto il chitarrista Jim De Angelis, con il quale registrerà un album nel 1985. Album interessante, nel quale egli si integra perfettamente con l’amico De Angelis.

Autore di canzoni che hanno avuto molto successo, ma soprattutto paroliere e come tale ha collaborato con Bob Hilliard e con Duke Ellington. Molte sue composizioni sono state interpretate da grandi orchestre del momento come quelle di Glenn Miller e di Guy Lombardo e da cantanti come Dinah Shore e Vic Damone. Nel 1972 è stato insignito della Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

Compagnia discografica ed etichetta fondata a New York all’inizio del 1940 da Bob Thiele. La maggior parte del suo catalogo è stato ristampato da Thiele sulle sue etichette Flyng Dutchman e Doctor Jazz. Nel 1993 la sua etichetta è stata ripresa per una serie di nuove edizioni su CD.

Chitarrista dagli ottimi mezzi tecnici dovuti agli studi fatti al Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello di Venezia, dove si è diplomato in chitarra classica. Musicista dalla sensibilità musicale particolare. La sua musica recupera le atmosfere romantiche, intimistiche, avvolte di malinconia. Chitarrista dalla sonorità cantabile. Nel 1987 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Giancarlo Schiaffini, poi di quella diretta da Bruno Tommaso e della European Music Orchestra. Ha collaborato inoltre con Reggie Workman, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Luis Agudo, Roberto Gatto, Furio Di Castri, Marco Tamburrini e molti altri. Ha partecipato a molti Festival in Italia ed all’estero.

Ha studiato il pianoforte con il cugino Pasquale Signorelli e nel 1917 ha fatto parte della ”Original Menphis Five”, poi della “Original Dixieland Jazz Band” dal 1920 al 1921. Ha avuto modo di suonare con i maggiori musicisti dell’epoca, come: Joe Venuti, Adrian Rollini, è stato con Paul Whiteman nel 1938, ha collaborato con Eddie Lang, Frank Trumbauer, con Bobby Hackett nel 1947 e con Phil Napoleon. Ha ricostituito la Original Menphis Five nel 1958, partecipando con la stessa a diversi show televisivi. E’ stato un compositore di successo.

Si è diplomato a Bari al Conservatorio N.Piccinni in pianoforte con il massimo dei voti. Pianista che ha collaborato con Partipilo, poi con Ottaviano. Musicista dal ricco universo musicale che va dall’hard bop più avanzato, il jazz modale e le dure e complesse canzoni dell’M-Base. Egli è senz’altro un pianista originale, nel quale convivono il linguaggio romantico e l’impressionismo europeo, insieme ai mostri sacri del jazz afroamericano.

Ha suonato con i “Jellyroll Kings” di John Haim e, alla sua morte nel 1949, ha riunito e diretto la “Southern Jazz Band”. Ha deciso di suonare il jazz di New Orleans post Armstrong e per molti anni è stata la bandiera di questo genere musicale. Ha inciso molti dischi del suo collaudato repertorio con il gruppo che per molti anni resterà inalterato e quindi in possesso di un ideale affiatamento. E’ morto per una pleurite quando ancora era sulla cresta dell’onda.
SILKHEART.
Compagnia discografica ed etichetta fondata a Stoccolma nel 1985 da Lars Olof Gustavsson e Keith Knox. Ha pubblicato il primo album nel 1987 e alla fine del 1999 aveva all’attivo circa 49 album. In seguito ha pubblicato solo CD.

Il suo primo lavoro di rilievo lo ha ottenuto con Joe Haynes nel 1932, con il quale ha preso parte anche a diverse sedute di incisione. Ha lavorato poi con Phil Harris e ha raggiunto il massimo della notorietà con Bob Crosby nel 1938, con il quale si è esibito nei locali più importanti delle grandi città. Ha suonato anche con Benny Goodman nel 1944, con Yank Lawson nel 1945, con Tommy Dorsey nel 1950. In seguito lavorato negli studi della CBS ed alla fine degli anni’50 ha fatto parte dei “Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians”. Agli inizi degli anni’60 ha lasciato la musica e si è stabilito a Chicago.

SILVA ALAN, TREADWELL (B)

Cresciuto a Brooklyn ha studiato pianoforte e violino dall’età di dieci anni e per tre anni tromba con Donald Byrd. Ha frequentato il New York College Of Music e nel 1962 ha suonato il contrabbasso. Ha iniziato ad interessarsi del free jazz, è entrato a far parte del Free From Improvisation Ensemble di Burton Greene nel 1964, e ha preso parte alle manifestazioni dell’October Revolution in Jazz, che sfociarono nella rivoluzione di ottobre. Ha lavorato con la Jazz Composer’s Guild di Bill Dixon, con Cecil Taylor, con Sun Ra dal 1965 al 1970, con Sunny Murray dal 1966 al 1969, con Albert Ayler dal 1968 al 1970. Nel 1971 si è trasferito a Parigi dove ha fondato la “Celestrial Comunication Orchestra!” ed in seguito la “Celestrial Sring”. Diventato il santone del free francese, in seguito, ha fondato l’IACP (Institute For ASrtistic And Ciltural Perception)

Per oltre dieci anni è stato il batterista di Hot Lips Page e per altri undici è stato l’accompagnatore ufficiale di Sammy Davis Jr. Nel 1971 si è stabilito in Francia a Parigi, dove ha iniziato a suonare con il pianista Pierre Calligaris. Batterista dallo stile spettacolare che ricorda molto Jo Jones, anche se il suo modello è stato Chick Webb. Ha anche collaborato nella carriera con: i Norman Diller Dancer, Cyril Haynes, Clarence Gatemouth Johnson, Al Casey, Helen Humes, Sy Oliver, Sonny Thompson, Claude Bolling, Bob Vatel e Red Richards.

Ha debuttato con l’orchestra di Ze Rodrix ed in seguito ha fatto parte di moltissimi gruppi di musica brasiliana e si è distinto nel jazz con Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Shelly Manne, Peggy Lee, Cal Tjader, Sarah Vaughan, George Duke, Flora Purim e Egberto Gimondi.

Cantante dalla voce di soprano, maturata in studi classici, venuta alla ribalta del jazz nei vari club newyorkesi all’inizio del 1980. Interessante soprattutto per la sintesi raffinata che propone tra jazz e musica classica, vocalizza Rachmaninoff e Ravel oltre ai temi classici del jazz con la stessa tecnica ed il linguaggio che solo la grande Ella Fitzgerald ha portato nel jazz. Ha studiato alla Temple University e arrangiamento con Bob Brookmeyer e Manny Albam. Cantante arrangiatrice e compositrice compagna del sassofonista Joe Lovano. Ha collaborato con Barry Harris, Kenny Wheeler, con Joe Lovano nel “Windance Endemble”, Tom Rainey, Billy Drewes, George Garzone, Gerry Hemingway, John Lindberg, Janice Friedman, Ron Blake, Scott Lee, Yoron Israel. Nel 1996 ha fondato il gruppo “Vocalise”insieme a Vic Juris, Drew Gress e Victor Lewis. Ha diretto anche dei cori in importanti chiese. Sperimentatrice giudiziosa che confronta con molto ordine linguaggio e stile.
