Voyager: Navigating Essential Life Advice (A Poem)

The ups and downs of our existence can sometimes leave us feeling a little lost; searching for something that encourages us to make sense of all the challenges, changes and emotional complexities that we experience.

I’m aware life can sometimes feel like a storm; you either see it coming and can prepare for what lies ahead, or you’re taken by surprise as a deluge leaves you scrambling for cover. If I could share some advice about life in general, it’s that even the darkest most heavy lingering clouds will eventually clear and bring fresh, new possibilities.

A poem by Molly from Transatlantic Notes called, ’Voyager’ that reads: Navigate the stars and oceans of what was, and sail among what could be. Find yourself somewhere between longing and living; embrace the rough and the quelled sea. Taste the salt and chase the wind; sing with the birds at sunrise. Give time for cool mists to linger, but seek harbour under dark skies. Befriend the waves both high and low; let the cold dance over your skin. Warm yourself in fresh daylight; exhale the dawn and begin.

This poem was composed as a way to offer some advice about embracing all aspects of our lived experience; it’s a reminder that life goes through cycles. What may seem complicated, difficult or uncertain will give way to all that’s good, beautiful, life-giving and invigorating — take these moments in. Even the most terrifying winds and waves of life can be traversed; they may bluster and sting for a while but they will eventually calm.

When I am facing my own struggles I always think of the sea — at times harsh and unforgiving — but I take note that while the rain may dance on its surface; so does the sun.

Where is your voyage taking you? What advice about embracing life would you give?
