Marilyn Mosby (1980- ) is the state’s attorney (public prosecutor) for the US city of Baltimore, Maryland. Last week on Monday (April 27th 2015) there were riots over the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of the police. On Friday (May 1st), Marilyn Mosby, gloriously righteous on the steps of city hall, charged all six officers with crimes, one of them with “second degree depraved heart murder”. There was dancing in the streets!
In Maryland, as in much of the US, killer cops are rarely charged with a crime – only 2%. Most public prosecutors are in bed with the police, who they depend on to win cases. On top of that, Mosby comes from a long line of police officers, five generations.
Mosby has only been in office four months. She won the office in a citywide election last year against the sitting state’s attorney, who outspent her four-to-one. But she promised something he apparently could not, despite all his money (or because of all his money): that “no one is above the law.” Not even the police.
- Catchphrase: “Our time is now.”
- Campaign song: “Wake Up Everybody”
- Favourite Bible verse: Isaiah 41:10:
“Fear not, for I am with you,
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you,
I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Purpose: She says God has put her here for a purpose. When she was 14, her 17-year-old cousin, mistaken for a drug dealer, was gunned down in front of her house. It made her determined to become a prosecutor no matter what.
Education: As a child, she took a two-hour bus ride every day to go to a good school. Later she went to Tuskegee University, becoming the first in her family to get a university degree. She got her law degree at Boston College, the same place as John Kerry.
She could have easily made a nice living being a lawyer for an insurance company, as she did for a time. Instead she moved to West Baltimore, the poor Black part of Baltimore that gave us Freddie Gray – and Thurgood Marshall. Her husband, Nick Mosby, represents that part of Baltimore on the city council.
Marilyn Mosby:
“I don’t have to turn on the news and open up the newspaper in order to see the crime impacting my community. All I have to do is open up the door.”
Unlike the mayor and the president, she does not call the rioters “thugs”:
“Our young people, I know that they are called ‘thugs’, those are young people crying out in the sense of hopelessness in this city … They are not thugs, they are our children. They need us. They need us now.”
She still has to prove her charges against the six officers in a court of law. If she can send even one of them to prison for a long time, she could easily win the election for mayor. Some have already brought up the P-word: president.

Some of those charges will stick such as the criminal negligence involved in the van ride and failure to provide medical care, when repeatedly asked; not to mention failure to follow standard procedures whilst transporting them. Charging them with so many counts was smart, as some of these charges will stick. Those who were involved in this incident who were on the periphery may ‘roll over’. Perhaps they are looking for the weakest ‘link’ who will testify against the others. I can also see those charged, trying to get the venue changed. Hopefully they are charged with Human Rights infringements in the future.

Marilyn Mosby is AWESOME! Side note: The hubster had a critique to add- “why did this writer mention- John Kerry and Boston College, it’s not a great school, why even mention the correlation?”

Hero? Certainly in comparison to prosecutors in other similar cases that failed to bring charges. But seriously, do you think she would have brought these charges absent the people in the street? In an age like this of a government run by corrupt and venal people, ’tis a rare thing for a public servant to do what she is paid to do, when police are involved. But there is apparently a culture of police oppression there in Baltimore presided over by blacks in high positions. Mosby deserves credit for bucking that system. But do you really think these officers would have been indicted absent the people in the streets? If by hero you mean the person(s) who got these killer cops charged, it was the people in the streets.

@Nomad…It was actually both the people in the streets and a prosecutor who stated that she heard them “no justice…no peace”. She not only has to deal with city hall and those established blacks but the newly appointed Loretta Lynch. Ms. Lynch cited that her first duty as the head of the DOJ is to travel the country and soothe and build morale in the various police departments. When she went to Baltimore, footage was aired as she spoke of how competent, hardworking and caring the police are. When in fact, the issue was the rogue cops not the ones she described when making her rounds.

I have indeed grown cynical. What should not be overlooked here is that these are not just 6 rogue cops that decided to torcher this hapless individual. Apparently it’s routine practice. Can’t find the article on that right now or I would link it. This appears to be standard operating procedure. It’s just that this method of torture went a little to far this time and ended in death. This is systematic evil. And power structure under which it operates is black. So I’m not ready to enshrine any black heroes from out that power structure. Not just yet.

I think I know what you are talking about. Is it referring to the “rough rides”?
I understand your hesitance. The question here is….what makes the case different from the other cases of police brutality? Why did Mrs. Mosby not step up then? Why did none of these black leaders in Baltimore speak up then? I am sure this type of police brutality has resulted in death before. The only answer I have is the protests and the peoples response played a big role. Either way I can not look a gift horse in the mouth.

Simple answer – NO.
The reason why I say that is PG county’s police brutality (esp. police-induced fatalities, such as those in custody) got worse than Baltimore’s during the 90s, prompting a DOJ probe there. The fact that it became more affluent, and majority black with elected black officials did not have direct effect on the police brutality.
Maybe it was during the “let’s get tough on crime” era that encouraged police brutality.
The response after the DOJ probe was more related to the revision of the internal administrative practice, not the indictment of officers. But PG did not have mass protests on the streets. I suppose that 15 years ago was not the time for it yet.

Hitler was NOT honest. Very much the contrary. (“Peace in our time” being just one example).
And being a good speaker? If you consider shouting to further rouse masses psyched up by Wagner music good speaking… Yeah, ok. Your definition of good speaking is wildly different from mine. Though I suspect you haven’t actually seen any photage of Hitler speaking and is just repeating something that’s been said over and over to the point where most just blindly accept it.
Oh, and you are definitely a horrible, horrible person for saying you’d vote for Hitler over Hillary. Punctuated by saying you *mean* it. Abagond really does allow anybody to post here.

You don’t know me well enough to get that I was being facetious. First of all I don’t vote. I don’t see any point in it, especially nowadays when people don’t seem to notice that all of constitutional rights are being actively voided or taken away from us(because people be on the internet all day everyday complaining about BS like that’s going to do anything but don’t like to actually read legislation or trade agreements or watch CSPAN or any number of things that affect how we actually live our lives.).
Second of all, Hitler was elected, that’s why I think voting doesn’t work especially during times of economic crisis when democracy is effectively suspended and I didn’t vote. I think our Democracy has effectively been suspended ever since the Patriot Act and that all these elections are just performances. Bad performances. And Hitler assassinated all his competition once he got into power anyway so it made no difference whether or not he won the election that made him Chancellor of Germany. The Nazi’s would have probably just found some other more violent way to seize power. Getting elected just made that power acquisition, and all the rest, go more smoothly.
And obviously I would vote for Marilyn Mosby if she was even a candidate for Senator. But she’s not and if she’s as honest as she is she’ll never get any farther than local politics in this country.
But if there was a hypothetical election with the worst possible candidates in the Universe which there obviously isn’t because Hitler is long dead and gone,
IF I had to pick
I honestly would pick the more honest evil one over the dishonest evil one.
And I do mean that. because at least I know where I stand with the honest evil one. I don’t think there’s any such thing as the lesser of two evils. There’s the just the evil that you prefer. And I would rather deal with the Devil I know. Hitler actually did the things he said he was going to do, they were evil things, but he did actually tell people pretty bluntly he was going to do them in advance. He repeatedly stated his intentions before he carried them out. I prefer having a warning so I know to run away or have an actual plan for whatever the honest evil one is going to do. At least I get a chance to prepare myself somehow.
Hillary on the other just lies over trivial things unnecessarily, like getting shot at in Bosnia, when that never happened to her. Or the fact that was married to the president somehow makes her qualified to be president, when no it doesn’t unless she somehow thinks and wants people to agree that career experience is sexually transmitted. Hillary basically f.ck.d her way into being Secretary of State.
She’s a great example of how sexism gives white women just as much privilege as white men, with all the bullsh.t she gets away with. Hillary says things just as dumb as Sarah Palin ever did and I think Sarah Palin is the smarter one of the two. I think a lot of those “dumb” Republicans just act dumb to come across as more relatable and it works. Giving them credit where credit is due, they are public relations experts in a way that most Democrats just don’t seem to be. All the GOP candidates are the same, they all go to the same Ivy league schools, the same versions of sorrities and frats their education and intelligence level is about the same.
But since you decided to be the donkey of the say please be offended over some trivial BS on the internet when you should be worried about way more important things that actually affect the way you live your life in much more meaningful way than what some random person on the internet has to say about a dead dictator.
Abagond doesn’t let anyone post on his blog. He lets people who follow his comment policy post on his blog to promote free discussion and free thinking. Because people clearly need to be thinking, and they’re not. And censorship is one of the ways totalitarian governments control populations.
But if it offends you still, no one is forcing you to read what I write or what Abagond lets people write at gunpoint so I’m sorry you’re bothered but I stand by what I said, IDGAF. People are being murdered indiscriminately, I gotta save my f.cks to give for sh.t that actually matters.

All I needed to read essentially. Hitler wasn’t elected, though that is what people repeat over and over. He got into parliament, then used illegal means to crush his opponents and the took power in a coup.
Anybody who says “Hitler got elected” knows nothing about history. Feel free to ignore them.
That the Nazi apologist then spent lots of words on “don’t read it if it offends you” just confirms it. And that they used a 2nd username to tout their nazi garbage…
Hey Abagond, don’t you at least have a rule against people using two usernames? AlitaRegina/mariareginacd have already used two in this thread.

Abagond’s comment policy is against SOCK PUPPETS:
https://abagond.wordpress.com/2010/03/18/new-rule-no-sock-puppets/
If you have been posting under one name for a long time and want to change it – like La Reyna, Jade and Black&German have all done – then simply tell us about the change in the first comment with the new name: “Hey, this is Kat. I am now posting under the name of Jade”. That is fine because you are not trying to fool anyone.
Under both names I acknowledged the statements I made as my own and I made a post declaring the name change literally the same day that I changed the avatar and my name on another thread.
Only Jefe and Naishee have brought up me being banned within hours of each other…
I’m not even going to ask you to check the IP addresses because anyone with rudimentary computer sense knows how to change or fake their IP address, its pretty easy to sock puppet if you’re technologically knowledgeable enough and loser with way too much time on their hands and a petty grudge but I’m just going to, assuming they’re not both Jefe, not to respond to both of them if that’s alright?
I don’t want either of these attention whores stalking my comments, but since they clearly want to for some reason that I can’t be bothered with right now. I wish them the best of luck in finding some way to get me kicked out of the discussion for something that I said, to someone else or about something else that they didn’t like but are too afraid to actually engage me directly about some other time. I don’t get what they’re on about and I don’t really care either as I wasn’t talking to or insulting any of them.
@ Naishee, Anne, and/ either/or Jefe
You’re waaaaay too transparent. If you’re mad about what I said about the Russia and China and BRIC connection in or Zambia electing a white man, in the Open Thread even though I wasn’t insulting any of you, you can just say so, you don’t have to stalk my other discussions and make really obvious reaching statements.
Jesus, are petty internet grudges really that serious now?
Listen I apologize to all of you. I don’t vote so…even if I could vote for Hitler, who a part of the Nazi party who won the majority of seats in the party Hitler was appointed from a party that was ELECTED AND WON THE MAJORITY OF SEATS and assassinated all his opposition and we basically just said the same thing anyway but whatever you completely missed the point of that.
I’m squashing this, have a good weekend.
