America’s Gun Problem

Here’s your cartoon for this week’s CNN Opinion newsletter. Please sign up to get these in your inbox every Sunday

A couple weeks ago, Politico ran a cartoon by the “anonymous” cartoonist (shame on you, Politico). And in the cartoon, he points out that the percentage of gun ownership in this nation has remained steady since the early 70s. He is correct but what the Canadian cartoonist pretending to be a U.S. cartoonist misses is the number of households that own more than one gun, the types of guns, and the sheer volume of guns in this country (the country I live in, not the one the “anonymous” cartoonist lives in).

About three in ten Americans own a gun and 29 percent of those own five or more guns. I’m sure there is a greater ratio of people owning AK-47s and Uzis today than in 1972. In a nation of 333 million people, there are over 400 million guns. And as we’ve seen over the past week with people being shot for knocking on the wrong door, pulling into the wrong driveway, or getting into the wrong car, there are too many gun owners in this country who shouldn’t even own one.

The fraud that is the “anonymous” cartoonist is telling us that we don’t have a gun problem here in the United States of America…from the safety of his drawing board in Canada.

Music note: I listened to Bush.

  1. Easy access to arms, the ability to get a firearm without the strict background checks, the waiting period, etc., etc., etc., is what’s causing the deaths by firearms rising higher by the day in America, and the Congress’s being in the N.R.A’s pockets, doesn’t help at all, it only worsens the situation.

  3. Every time there are incidents of people being shot and/or killed the republicans and the NRA just keep pretending that the proliferation of guns and automatic weapons has nothing to do with it. I am so glad when I hear that others can see the truth which is that there are too many people who own guns but shouldn’t.
