The giant gilded statue that hovers atop the July Column in the Place de la Bastille in Paris, symbolises liberty.  The Genie de la Liberté brandishes the torch of civilisation in one hand and and the remains of his broken chains in the other.  The 47 metre high column bears the gold engraved names of those who lost their lives during the July 1830 revolution.
