Lovecraft Country

EOOOON – GAH!!!!!

I had a boss who would say that when things were beyond description, when any spoken language just didn’t have the right words. I’ve used that phrase ever since. And THAT is how I describe the trailer for Lovecraft Country. Let me  elaborate why.

FIRST: Let me begin by saying I read H.P. Lovecraft‘s work years ago. Scared me like crazy. See you read his work and think “Oh, that’s not scary.” Then you can’t go to sleep unless you leave ALL of the lights on!!!! And you stay creeped out for a long time. Like months.

Since I inhabit Geek circles I have come across references to Cthulu and other Lovecraftian horrors. In short, his characters and “creep” factor have permeated the culture of horror and speculative fiction. I have enjoyed seeing the references. I also know that Cthulu can be brought low by a steamboat (read Call of Cthulu and you will understand). Ah evil you can be destroyed!

SECOND: Dang it! Lovecraft was a serious racist! ARGH *HEADDESK* ARGH! I mean, when I read the n-word in one of his books I was very turned off. That kind of stopped me reading more. Then I heard he was a serious racist who liked Hitler?!?! RAGE!!!!!! Read: We Can’t Ignore H.P. Lovecraft’s White Supremacy. It is an excellent article – and depressing. I stopped reading and truly enjoying the horror of Lovecraft because frankly there is nothing more horrible that the blind belief in the superiority of one race. Don’t. Get. Me. Started.

I share this above so you know my own mindset on why Lovecraft Country is FREAKING AWESOME!!!

THEREFORE:  We have a story that brings the “creep” and horror of Lovecraft AND shows the horror of racism! This is so perfect it is beyond. It is transcendent. It is perfect! I know, I know, I haven’t watched it yet but just look at the below description and trailer and tell me that this isn’t perfect. Take that racist BS and show it for what it is: Horror. Ugly Horror.

Of course Jordan Peele – the genius who gave us Get Out – will take this story and RUN with it! Well done. This for me is a karmic, story line, full circle. You want to be racist – come look at the horror YOU create. Note: This series is inspired by the book of the same name Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff.

I can’t wait to read the book. I can’t wait to see show. OH! And I LOVE THAT SONG!
