WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us? Episode 4

“Dice In Pot”

Tuesdays at 12:00 pm EST on Crunchyroll

Weeks have passed with no news on Ctholly’s mission. Willem is anxious but continues to keep up with his work. He escorts Tiat to the hospital for a check up. She is awakening to her powers and needs to begin her training.

Jel’s thoughts

I think this series’ best quality is its world building. Tiat’s obsession with Lizard romance movies and their Hollywood style gossip is one of the better examples. Not only does it show creativity and attention to detail, it also shows there is still joy and fun in this world and that there are reasons these girls would want to protect it. I also find it interesting that they have movies at all. I originally thought this was going to be a medieval fantasy type setting because of how everyone is dressed, but it seems the technology is more around late 19th/early 20th century. That is certainly less explored territory for anime, so I’m cool with that.

Of course the main purpose of showing Tiat’s hobby is to give context to her hospital visit. Suddenly we feel more sad when we realize the inevitable path she has been set on. It makes me wonder how tragic this show is actually going to get. The pieces are all there for at least one character to die but they’ve built in some hope with Willem. His understanding of their weapons and experience fighting the monsters have already come in to play since we see Ctholly didn’t go through with the original plan to sacrifice herself. I guess they could be building us up just to tear us down later, but my gut instinct at the moment says we’ll still end up with a relatively positive ending.

I might totally change my mind depending on what we find out about Ctholly’s mission. It’s cool she’s still alive but lost in all the extended hugging we kind of forget they said the mission failed. What repercussions are going to come from that? Did a lot of other people end up dying instead? In choosing to avoid the suicide option, is the entire fairy weapon project compromised? It’s impossible to say without more details, so let’s see what happens next week.

  1. For me, this show commits the cardinal anime sin of baldly exploiting the suffering of children to win over viewers. It may not be despicable like Eromanga Sensei, but it is essentially still cynical junk.

    • I think it crosses that line sometimes (see my post on episode 2) but not always. I’m not even going to say it’s a good show, but I do at least find it interesting to watch.
