U.S. Department of State Internship

The U.S. Department of State is now accepting applications for their Spring 2013 Student Internship Program.

Summary:  The U.S. Department of State is the lead institution for the conduct of American diplomacy and the Secretary of State is the President’s principal foreign policy advisor. The women and men of the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service and Civil Service support the Secretary of State and the formulation and implementation of U.S. Foreign Policy.  Internships with the Department of State offer U.S. citizen college, university, and graduate school students an opportunity to experience the work of our Foreign and Civil Service careers first hand.  Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.  

Requirements:  An applicant must be:

  • A U.S. citizen;
  • A student:   A student is an individual who has been accepted for enrollment, or who is enrolled as a degree-seeking student in an accredited college or university;
  • A full- or part-time college or university junior, senior, or graduate student: An applicant is considered a junior if he/she will have completed all sophomore credits (60 or more semester hours or 90 quarter hours) or 2 full years of undergraduate study by the time the internship begins and will be entering at least the junior year immediately following completion of the internship; AND
  • A continuing student returning to academic coursework the semester or quarter directly following the completion of the internship.NOTE:  Graduating seniors or college graduates intending to enroll in graduate school immediately following the completion of their internship are eligible to apply (you do not have to be accepted into graduate school at the time of application). See important note.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.NOTE: Students tentatively selected for an internship must undergo a background investigation and receive at minimum a SECRET security clearance. Refer to the Internship Brochure for further explanation.

IMPORTANT: You are eligible to apply for the Department’s internship program if you have not yet completed your registration at a college or university for graduate or post-graduate studies (including law school) or are awaiting an admissions determination for graduate or post-graduate studies.  However, if selected for an internship, you must provide proof that you have registered, or have been accepted for enrollment, for studies in the semester or quarter immediately following the internship to qualify.
