John Bon Jovi’s daughter is in a hospital in upstate New York recovering from a drug overdose.  Stephanie Bon Jovi was found unresponsive when the ambulance crew arrived at her Hamilton College dorm.  Police Officers sent to the dorm found a small amount of heroin and arrested Ian Grant, who also attends Hamilton.  Investigators then obtained a search warrant for the room and found Marijuana, heroin and drug paraphernalia.  According to investigators, Bon Jovi and Grant were both charged with “seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor. Bon Jovi was also charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and criminally using drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.”  One can only imagine what it’s like as a parent to be called by police and informed your daughter is in the hospital due to an overdose.  What’s so ironic about this story, is if there’s one rocker who was not a drug user, it was Bon Jovi.  What’s also strange is how often, those with the most privilege, are the most messed up.  It’s almost as if without a little struggle, one can’t be happy.  When things are handed to you on a silver platter and money has no value, where does drive and incentive come from?  Let’s not turn this in to innocent college drug experimentation as the drug of choice here was not Marijuana but a highly, potent drug.  When I graduated from high school a friend of mine was given a Ferrari Testerossa.  I loved that car and was completely jealous as I was driving a five-year old Firebird that I bought with the help of my parents.  And here’s what’s strange about human nature.  I enjoyed and appreciated my five-year old car with eight track player and roll down windows, more than my friend enjoyed his Ferrari.  The lesson to be learned is it’s ok to give your children possessions, but they must earn them.  People need to strive for things.  It makes them stronger the same way germs make you resistant to disease.  Parents need to teach that lesson.  This young woman could have anything she wants in the world, and she chose heroin.
