More OP ONIONS about crappy weekly Japanese cartoons. Should be doing coursework instead of writing this. Now with pretty pictures for twice the effort!
Accel World ep. 3
Uuuugh. Whiny protag continues to be just a really annoying character. Does he need to tell everyone to hate him because he hates himself in the most pathetic way possible? It’s like there’s a race in the anime industry to see who can create the most unlikable, self-hating, pathetic, worthless protagonist possible. Fanservice was completely unnecessary and arbitrary (Black haired girl gets challenged to a fight after she steps out of the shower! Cabling is very subtly likened to sex! Hurr!) and of course brought nothing to the episode. Spent way too much time just telling us things over a cabling session (so lol no animation) instead of showing us or doing it any other remotely interesting way. And both females are confirmed for crushing on protag for no goddamn good reason. Oh wait, he apparently has “good points” that only his childhood friend knows, meaning we’ll never actually see them ever but are told they apparently exist. The only interesting thing was the hook at the end of the episode, implying someone’s controlling the other girl (or using her as a proxy to challenge black haired girl). I’ll give it another episode, but there’s every chance I’ll probably end up dropping it.
Acchi Kocchi ep. 3
The hnnng continues with snowball fights and home ec. food tasting. Not quite as good as the previous two episodes, but still absolutely lovely.
Haiyore! Nyaruko-San ep. 2
More insanity and chaos and general amusement this week, with a ton of references most of which I didn’t even get. Also a yuri factor has been introduced which is always entertaining. Nyaruko’s ahoge goes fucking crazy this week, and her affection towards MC is once again over the top and hilarious. Another good episode!
Jormungand ep. 2
Less action packed which is kinda disappointing, but we get to see Koko’s skills in planning and influence (and her cold-heartedness). A good character building episode, especially for Jonah – him laughing after leaving a battlefield without firing a shot shows him to not be as cold or dead inside as we may have thought, that he still has some childishness in him.
Lupin III ep. 3
SAMURAI FURENDU. A very entertaining episode, very very good. Morals and ethics and stuff in the underground, on a train. And it nearly went an entire episode without showing Fujiko tits!
Bodacious Space Pirates ep. 16
Didn’t really feel this week’s episode. A lot of second hand embarrassment, and I was kinda hoping they’d all be dressed up as pirates, not just in random cosplay. A shame, really. Next week’s episode looks set to be good – current club’s president wants Marika to kidnap the previous president. HMM.
Mirai Nikki ep. 26
Finale! Not hilariously bad or over the top or anything. Some good, some bad, kinda disappointing really. Full review pending.
Mysterious Girlfriend X ep. 3
This continues to get better. More romance, a bit of tension, and of course some weird-but-fanservicey-I-guess sex stuff. Urabe getting asked out by somebody else, and doing the saliva test on him (while she goes commando and so affecting her mental state), was certainly interesting, and helps establish the weird crazy bond the two have.
Phi Brain S2 ep. 2
Fuck yeah Phi Brain! More crazy shounen shit, puzzles being serious business, and the continued trend of females getting shafted so hard. Well, everyone does really. Everybody wants Kaito, but all Kaito wants (probably sexually) are puzzles. C’EST LA PAZARU.
Recorder to Randoseru Re ep. 3
Not a bad little episode – the boy’s older brother accidentally getting him to right “porn star” for his dreams and aspirations homework was amusing in itself, and then when you factor in the teacher’s reaction…
Sakimichi no Apollon ep. 2
A lot of character development this episode. Kaoru is doing the best he can to impress Ritsuko and beat Sentarou in some fashion to get his approval. Sentarou and Ristuko are Christian and judging by the boat scene it’s a pretty big deal. And of course Sentarou falling for that girl at the end of the episode. Romance is obviously going to play a fairly large part in this series which I didn’t expect and am a touch disappointed about. Romance is everywhere, I just wanted a good show about music! Well, it’s still good – excellent even – but the direction it could take isn’t what I really wanted, but oh well, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it anyway!
Sankarea ep. 3
The plot advances to somewhere! More of Rea’s emotions and struggles with her father are show, and the episode ends with her dying and coming back as a zombie. I think this means the series has started proper now, right? An enjoyable episode, even with the pointless and gratuitous fanservice – her death at the end was really well presented I thought, with the rain and MC’s reaction and everything.
Shining Hearts ep. 2
Even more insufferably nice! A storm happens and blah blah bread blah. Looks the setup of the story is largely over, and hopefully some more interesting things start happening from now on.
Polar Bear Café ep. 3
Zoo shenanigans and stuff. Kinda boring, not that entertaining, dropped.
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia ep. 2.
A little less humour this time, but still some great moments (“You saw my body, how embarrassing!”). Delving into some of her background was an excellent choice – it was needed and handled well. Continues to be enjoyable enough.
Tsuritama ep. 2
Stuff happens, Yuki learns to tie a knot, Haru becomes less annoying, Natsuki gains some respect for Yuki and Akira gets introduced more formally with his duck. There’s also some foreshadowing with Yuki’s grandmother, who appears to be physically ill but hiding it from Yuki. Could get somewhat dramatic, but for now still quite light hearted and fun.
Yurumates ep. 2-3
I was so ready to drop and then that happened and how could I drop it now?
Another pretty good week, with most things growing stronger and only a few disappointments. Some delays though from subbers – where’s Amnesia 3, whatever episode of Ozuma is next and Space Bros? (that last one was actually released as I was writing this, thx Commie).
Shame it was all totally overshadowed by the glory that was the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic season finale which was absolutely incredible you have no idea unless you watched it and then you know exactly what I mean fo’ realz.
I was going to argue Kaito may also want Rook but I guess they aren’t mutually exclusive. It may even be even what would work best for all three of them: Rook gives Kaito more puzzles, the puzzles get solved thus happy, Kaito is happy solving and Rook is happy watching his beloved solver! Screw the rest of the harem, this is the perfect match.
Seriously, Kaito being puzzlesexual would make crazy amounts of sense with his relationships…
