Seema Mustafa elected president of the Editors Guild of India; Sanjay Kapoor is general secretary

Seema Mustafa, the founder and editor of the website The Citizen, has been elected as the new president of the Editors Guild of India for a one-year term.

Mustafa defeated M.D. Nalapat of The Sunday Guardian, 87-51, in the first ever election of the Guild’s officebearers, held via Zoom, on Friday.

Previously, the Guild has chosen its officebearers by consensus.

Sanjay Kapoor, the journalist who broke the Jain Hawala tapes for Blitz and is now the editor of the magazine Hard News, was elected general secretary. He secured 90 votes, beating Smita Prakash of the news wire Asian News International (ANI) by 40 votes.

Kapoor bagged 90 of the 140 votes polled; Prakash ended up with 50.

Anant Nath, the Editor of The Caravan, was elected treasurer, unopposed.

The trio replace Shekhar Gupta of The Print, A.K. Bhattacharya of Business Standard, and Sheela Bhatt of ex-NewsX, respectively.
