THREE people have been charged with offences allegedly committed in a vehicle stolen from Corrimal on Saturday, while in a separate incident, two men and a woman have been arrested after a BMW failed to pay for fuel at Bulli, and lead police on a chase up Bulli Pass on Wednesday.
On Saturday, a Kia Sportage was allegedly stolen from a business on the Princes Highway at Corrimal and was captured on CCTV on Monday, after the occupants failed to pay for fuel at a petrol station.
The vehicle was involved in a crash with a vehicle at Berkeley about 9.45am on Wednesday. The driver and two passengers fled on foot and failed to offer any assistance to the driver of the second vehicle, a man aged in his 80s, who suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.
After inquiries police found the two passengers – a 17-year-old boy and 24-year-old woman – and the 25-year-old male driver at a nearby house. The trio were arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
The 25-year-old man was charged with steal motor vehicle, never licensed person drive on road, two counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, never licensed person drive on road, and two counts of drive conveyance taken without consent of owner and drive recklessly/furiously.
The 24-year-old woman was charged with dishonestly obtain property by deception and be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.
The pair were refused bail and appeared in Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday).
The 17-year-old was charged with being carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in a children’s court on Tuesday July 14. Investigations are continuing.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident two men and a woman have been arrested after a police pursuit up Bulli Pass on Wednesday.
Police first spotted the stolen BMW at Dapto on Wednesday, before losing sight of the vehicle. Later in the day, the BMW allegedly failed to pay for fuel at a Bulli service station before travelling at speed up Bulli Pass and onto Bulli Tops.
Police Airwing followed the BMW north to Waterfall where it crossed the grass median strip and started heading south.
Police on the ground monitored the stolen vehicles movements – with PolAir overhead – before it came to a stop about 45 minutes later in bushland at Berkeley.
The driver and two passengers ran from the car. The 28-year-old driver was found hiding in bushland, while a 29-year-old passenger was found hiding in the backyard of a home. The 23-year-old woman was arrested walking along a nearby street.
The 28-year-old man was charged with breach of bail, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, possess prohibited drug, drive recklessly/furiously and drive motor vehicle during disqualified period.
The 29-year-old man was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, possess prohibited drug and enter enclosed land not prescribed without lawful excuse.
The 23-year-old woman was charged with being carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence – people there and breach of bail. They refused bail and faced Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday).
Wollongong Police District Commander, Superintendent Evan Quarmby praised the efforts of all police involved.
“The arrests are the culmination of great police work by multiple commands and specialist units working together,” Supt Quarmby said.
“We will continue to work together to target crime in all its forms.”
