During my 2011 visit to Sicily I decided to hike Monte Pellegrino (the Mountain of Palermo), about 5.5 miles round trip. Call me cheap, call me determined; I would make a day of it and walk from my Hostel to the top of Monte Pellegrino (another 4 miles) for stunning views of Palermo. The hike led me to Santa Rosalia church (saint patron of Palermo) built-in 1625. It is a church and convent extending 25 meters (82 feet) inside the mountain. The church serves as a burial-place and shrine to Santa Rosalia who died in the cave in the 12th Century, only to appear a few centuries later to residents of Palermo. I hope you enjoy the photos.
