Esteemed Readers! Happy Easter! It’s time for joy, so let’s continue our exploring of the Street Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
The article below belongs to a journalist, a carnival specialist, Andrea Estevão.
“Carnival as potential.
Changes noticed during the Street Carnival of Rio de Janeiro reveal incredible figures. Almost 600 carnival blocks of various sizes & types. There are almost six million merrymakers in the audience, including one million tourists, who contribute about five billion reals in the Prefecture treasury. Besides, a number of spectators who try to catch the feast movement & potential amazes. Market & academy, revelry & dystopia, citizenry & utopia are forms that reveal the city plurality.
A city is a result of diverse experiences, talks, creative acts. During the carnival this diversity is strengthened thanks to desires that are transformed into experiences. Movements that raise & protect social claims & cultures defended with groups named ‘blocos na rua’ / street blocks are planned far beyond four traditional days of revelry.
The idea of carnavalization concerns movements of destabilization by means of subversion, breaking relationship with the official world & excessive joy that might be noticed in carnival trains. This way they try to defend numerous violated rights from the list of violated rights of a completely conservative & aggressive policy. And it doesn’t concerns the costume agenda.
All that shows that the contemporary carnival movement makes a certain oxygenation of policy that tries to make friends with culture again. Celebrations & feasts have an important place in the city & reflect a free sharing in the process of restoration of the inclusive public space.”
