2024 County and City Council Elections candidate selections for the “Other” political parties

Adrian Kavanagh, First posted 22nd March 2024, with updates as new candidate nominations announced, or when I come across these details – latest update – 21st May 2024.

Any links in this post are to online announcements of candidate selections – there will be no specific links to candidate webpages.

The groups/parties listed here are smaller parties that won very few, or no, seats at the 2019 Local Election and who had – at least by the middle of March 2024– selected only a relatively small number of Local Elections 2024 candidates. As such – and mainly due to the time pressures being experienced by the owner/creator of this website – candidate selections for all of these parties will be logged in this “all in” post.

In all, across the different parties, there are one hundred and ninety one candidates for the smaller/new political parties, which will be contesting the 2024 Local Elections, listed here – forty one (21.5%) are women and one hundred and fifty (78.5%) are men.

The candidates listed as Independent Ireland candidates currently account for fifty nine candidates (eight are female – 13.6%) and this list of candidates includes twelve incumbents (20.3% of the total) and three other candidates who are former County Councillors (5.1%). Two candidates (Paul Hogan and Philip Sutcliffe) are contesting two electoral areas.

The candidates listed as 100% Redress Party candidates currently account for six candidates (one female – 16.7%)

The candidates listed as Workers Party candidates currently account for three candidates (all male)

The candidates listed as Workers and Unemployed Action candidates currently account for two candidates (one female – 50.0%) and this list of candidates includes one incumbent (50.0% of the total)

The candidate listed as a Independent 4 Change candidate currently accounts for one candidate (male).

The candidates listed as Rabharta: The Party for Workers And Carers candidates currently account for four candidates (two are female – 50.0%) and this list of candidates includes one incumbent (25.0% of the total) , although they do not appear as such on the official ballot papers

The candidates listed as Right to Change candidates currently account for two candidates (one is female – 50.0%) and both candidates are incumbents (100.0%).

The candidate listed as a Kerry Independent Alliance candidate currently accounts for one candidate (male).

The candidates listed as a Party for Animal Welfare candidate currently accounts for five candidates (four female – 80.0%).

The candidates listed as Irish Freedom Party candidates currently account for twenty eight candidates (eight are female – 28.6%)

The candidates listed as The Irish People candidates currently account for fifty five candidates (ten are female – 18.2%)

The candidates listed as Ireland First candidates currently account for eight candidates (three are female –37.5%)

The candidates listed as National Party candidates currently account for fifteen candidates (three are female – 20.0%). One candidate (Daeln Murphy) is contesting two electoral areas in County Carlow, one candidate (Jean Murray) is contesting three electoral areas in Dublin and Meath, and one candidate (Yan Mac Oireachtaigh) is contesting four electoral areas in South Dublin County.

While a number of the candidates in this grouping would appear likely to be first-time candidates, it does also include a number of more experienced candidates, as well as candidates who won Council seats in 2019 (or were subsequently co-opted on to the Council) as independents, or for other political parties, but then went on to later join new parties, with the most obvious example here being the incumbents who joined the new Independent Ireland political party in Spring 2024.

The candidates that have been officially selected across these different groupings include:
