Common Sense… Almost Lost

By Marion Algier – AskMarion

Common sense… often called the sixth sense, is the basic ability to perceive, understand, and judge things which are shared by (“common to”) nearly all people, and up until recently, it was reasonably expected of nearly all people without any need for debate, but somewhere along the way people living in the modern era, especially in the United States, seem to have lost it.

And with each generation our common sense seems to be diminishing because we longer have many real discussions at home or in school; disconnecting us.  Schools are no longer teaching critical thinking.  And we have allowed ourselves and our children’s minds to be cluttered with non-stop mind numbing activities that are filled with both subliminal and overt messages promoting political and social agendas, often not really our own, as well as activities filled with sex, violence, chatter and so-called divisional fun. It leaves virtually no time to read or day-dream, activities that expand the mind, no time to contemplate larger subjects and no time to find and listen to our inner voice, God, or whatever you want to call it… This produces politically correct programmed Zombies instead of forward thinking, logical and ambitious people.  It produces Sheeple.

Common sense produces people who want more for themselves and their children and grandchildren.  The loss of common sense produces complacency and nanny-staters… It produces compliant Obamabots.

Common Sense (Kindle) is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. In clear, simple language it explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time, it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history.  If you haven’t read it… you definitely should!!

In 2009, Glenn Beck wrote Glenn Beck’s Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine (Kindle); the book includes both Beck’s and Paine’s versions.

The loss of common sense and the ensuing decisions we make personally, as a people and as a country because of this missing sense has put us into decline as a society and a culture and will cost us the freest country in the world that our Founding Fathers fought for. And although we have been warned for over 50 years that we are heading down the path of decline, we are now standing on the edge tilting forward.

What if the American people, en masse, said: “Hell NO, we will not sign up for ObamaCare… We deserve better!…” period?  The Founding Fathers would be cheering us on and we just might get real reformed healthcare that helps and works for practically everyone.  And we definitely would get back some self-worth! Think about it.  Could we really become people of courage and principle like our ancestors were?  If there ever was a time to stand it is now… before Big Brother permanently takes over 1/6 of our economy, force us into a socialized single-payer medicine system with doctor, hospital and medicine shortages causing death panels while paying twice what you are paying now… that might even ultimately link Canada, Mexico and the U.S. under a NAFTA socialized medicine co-op in another step toward a New World Order.

Gosh… what if we really stood up?

Common sense is sound judgment that is not based on specialized knowledge. It is supposed to be innate good judgment that bubbles to the surface when you hear things that don’t make sense; when are challenged or threatened; or when things just sound wrong… that stay with you no matter how much hype and misinformation the powers that be pile on.

But these days when you have and follow your common sense, you are often looked at as if you have ‘Two-Heads’:

Like all the senses… some people’s are stronger or better than others.  Some people have better eye-sight.  Some people hear better. Some people have a better sense of smell and taste than others.  And some people have higher pain tolerances or more acute senses of touch.  And so it is and always has been with common sense, but we are reaching critical mass for extinction of this important 6th sense.

God gives all of us special gifts, even if we don’t recognize Him, but if we don’t use them, He often takes them away. I have been blessed (or cursed) with a hybrid of common sense; common sense with a touch of ESP.  The ‘long term outcome’ almost always occurs to me immediately and then I feel called upon to act on what I know, which often includes a plan or solution, but definitely a call to speak-up.  It is definitely both a gift and a curse, because I always seem to be promoting a cause or agenda that most people don’t get, although on the flipside, I have several times in life been paid for that ability.

When my daughter was a teenager and a dance major to boot, the world was being flooded with rap music.  It immediately occurred to me how damaging the lyrics and culture were.  But, when I talked to the school about their choice and over use of this music in routines and to the mother’s of my daughter’s friends, they looked at me like I had two heads.

When everyone was praising social networking and slapping their photos and secrets on Facebook and Twitter and people were giving everyone over 5-year-olds cell phones and unmonitored access to them and computers, the pitfalls and  problems were obvious to me.  Again when I talked to my friends and sometimes even strangers… the all looked at me as if I had two heads.

When Obama was running for office and people were following him like Zombies without really knowing why and when Sarah Palin wowed the RNC and much of the country with her historic VP Speech and then a few weeks later the American people allowed themselves to be programmed into believing that instead of being the amazing gal they heard and loved that she was now a moron and dangerous, because the media told them how to think… in both instances, I saw the handwriting on the wall. I started blogging and emailing and many if not most thought I had two heads but only half a brain.

And when the ObamaCare cramdown was going on, I read the bill and tried to keep up with the changes and not only blogged and emailed, but I gave talks at Senior Centers and anywhere else someone would let me. Most listened to the propaganda being fed them by AARP and the mainstream media instead or just didn’t care and many people again looked at me like I had two heads but only half a brain.

*What kept me going was the thought of a little old lady who waited for me after one of those ObamaCare meetings.  She could hardly walk but had the sparkle of determination in her eyes.  She grabbed my hands and said, “Thank you and bless you for what you are doing!  Most Americans don’t see it, but it is all happening again.  Obama is a very dangerous man!”  And then she rolled up her sleeves and pointed to her concentration camp number with tears welling up in her eyes.  That was the moment I realized that no matter what, I needed to listen to the voice in my head and react to the feelings in the pit of my stomach, and keep fighting and trying to educate everyone I met until things changed.

In the meantime millions of dollars have been spent on studies (coming our right and left) and millions have been affected negatively proving exactly what I realized just through common sense…

Rap music (like overly sexualized and violent video games and movies) promotes a lowering of the culture; lowers self-esteem and self-value in girls and young women; promotes misogyny in men; plus often leads to abuse and violence and a propensity for porn in the listeners and users.

Facebook, Twitter, cell phones for young kids and even teens, and unmonitored access to the Internet has intensified bullying, given access to private (and not so private) information to the everyone from the government to pedophiles and the negative side effects are piling up. Electronics have even been proven to cause health issues and certainly allow everyone to have access to your children and affect their upbringing, values and ideals without you knowing about it.  (And let us remember the accidents and deaths caused by texting.)

Obama and his entire administration have now proven who they really are to anyone paying attention, as well as the anti-American agenda they promote.  While Sarah Palin has remained the informed and concerned patriot that people originally saw, and she has been cleared of all the false accusations and malicious lawsuits waged against her by the left.  In fact Sarah has the magic and charisma, which the left fears, that they promoted as Obama’s strengths.  The best endorsement you can get as a conservative is from Palin, labeled the Kingmaker by many she has endorsed, whereas Obama’s coat-tails have pretty much always been non-existent and his support has often been the kiss of death for candidates.

And now without a doubt, even Obama voters and promoters have realized that they have been lied to about ObamaCare and nothing is or will be as it was promised. It actually does do and include all the negative provisions that those of us who read the original bills and warned them about said.  It was always about control and a power grab!

My question is how could so many people have lost their connection to common sense?  And what is it going to take to make people start listening to and following their own gut… the little voice in their head?  Perhaps turning off the electronics now and again, another suggested study result, might help Americans tune in?

On a personal note, the only good thing about being right when nobody else is listening, is the self-satisfaction and the occasional opportunity to remind someone of that fact.  Unfortunately the consequences of being right in these matters is so dire that there isn’t even any fun in saying, “I told you so!!”.

About Ask Marion

I am a babyboomer and empty nester who savors every moment of my past and believes that it is the responsibility of each of us in my generation and Americans in general to make sure that America is as good or even a better place for future generations as it was for us. So far... we haven't done very well!! Favorite Quotes: "The first 50 years are to build and acquire; the second 50 are to leave your legacy"; "Do something that scares you every day!"; "The journey in between what you once were and who you are becoming is where the dance of life really takes place". At age 62 I find myself fighting inoperable uterine Cancer and thanks to the man upstairs and the prayers from so many people including many of my readers from AskMarion and JustOneMorePet... I'm beating it. After losing our business because of the economy and factors related to the re-election of President Obama in 2012 followed by 16-mos of job hunting, my architect-trained husband is working as a trucker and has only been home approximately 5-days a month since I was diagnosed, which has made everything more difficult and often lonely... plus funds are tight. Our family medical deductible is 12K per year for two of us; thank you ObamaCare. But thanks to donations from so many of you, we are making ends meet as I go through treatment while taking care of my father-in-law who is suffering from late stage Alzheimer's and my mother-in-law who suffers from RA and onset dementia as well as hearing loss, for which there are no caretaker funds, as I continue the fight here online to inform and help restore our amazing country. And finally I need to thank a core group of family, friends, and readers... all at a distance, who check in with me regularly. Plus, I must thank my furkids who have not left my side through this fight. You can see them at JustOneMorePet.
