NGOs want end to racism
A group of NGOs wants Malaysia to sign and ratify a UN convention that calls for elimination of racial discrimination..
Pusat Komas, Islamic Renaissance Front and Projek Dialog are pushing for the ICERD because of seven major concerns.
They are
- alarmed at the rise of communal and racist sentiments in Malaysian politics;
- troubled at the rate of positive attention given to racist perspectives by the news media;
- distressed at the emergence of exclusive ethnocentric ultra-nationalist organisations masquerading as patriots;
- disturbed at the abuse of religion to legitimise racist and anti-democratic politics;
- dismayed at the continuous persecution of religious minorities;
- saddened by the continued absence of an inclusive conception of Malaysian identity; and
- concerned about the lack of sustained attempts to foster real and meaningful conversations about diversity across Malaysians of varying cultures, religions and beliefs,” the NGOs said in an online petition
Apart from the ratification of the ICERD, the NGOs are also demanding that the government end racism in Malaysia.

Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee: The government has run out excuses not to sign the United Nations International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee said today. The UN will review Malaysia’s human rights record in October, and that is when the country will also have to explain why it has not signed some of the international conventions.
Marina Mahathir: The government should lift existing reservations in the UN human rights conventions that it has ratified, in addition to ratifying ICERD without reservations. Human rights cannot be subdivided and isolated from one another. We must accept equality as a whole and not on just some issues, but not others.
Other speakers include Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan, Oriental Hearts and Mind Study Institute executive director KJ John, Pusat Komas director Jerald Joseph, Ikram secretary-general Zaid Kamaruddin, and Suaram adviser Kua Kia Soong.

Feb 20: Several NGOs and civil society leaders will come together this weekend to state opposition to what they call were worrying incidents and statements “to stoke the flames of ethnic and sectarian sentiments”.
Announcing the ‘Say NO to Racism’ event to be held this Saturday, 2 pm at the Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam (KGPA) in Bukit Kiara, Islamic Renaissance Front’s Dr Ahmad Farouk Musa lamented that more than half-a-century after independence, racism still appears in public in various forms, especially ahead of elections as is now.
“This has become all the more apparent in the lead up to the 13th General Elections, where questions about its results are often coupled with concerns about the state of community relations in the country, should there be drastic changes to the current balance of power,” he told Harakahdaily.
Farouk reiterated the urgency for the government to ratify the United Nations’ International Convention for the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination, saying it would pave the way in ensuring that public policies are inclusive regardless of culture, ethnicity or religion.
