Zheng Xiaoqiong 鄭小瓊: Variations on a Village 變異的村莊
Variations on A Village – Zheng Xiaoqiong, 2008-2010
Wind and direction, hand and palm, or also you, him:
Who is who, who am I? Oh, who is he?
Where do you come from?Where are you going? Oh, why
did you come from there? Why are you going there?
You are being forgotten, by tangled-up time. Oh, you are
forgiven by tangled affairs of the world. They are surging,
your restless desires, where will they take you, sometimes
when the sunset brings truckloads of brilliance,
a horse stands at the river and cries, in his
dark grey eyes I am searching for silence; under his hooves
this world of dust falling off with the last maple leaves, under his hooves
this human world in a shadow; the last wind
blowing through, dark grey mountains afar, a village in grey.
a horse gone from home stands in this huge sunset, lowering his head;
his hooves pounding away like winding peaks.
Time tangled up in my eyes, all this time like a mountain
surging from far away, like a galloping horse
with a soul like mine, standing among us.
Oh, wind brings the ruins of September. Agricultural wafts from the earth,
like a panting white horse. This is the 21st century,
machines all in grey, the lychee grooves felled.
Falling down, house and home become rubble, and all the land,
our earth burned by industrial flames towering up, oh
the buildings, the factories, concrete, from the mud up to me,
from machine arms to my own arms, corn leaves, rice sprouts.
My muscles, bones, skin and hair become part of the machine,
“a weak skinny rice field” has an unfitting ignorance, stretching out
its pure white roots, seizing the feet of the industrial age.
And there are still so many diamond souls. It is mine
standing there praying doomed to life or death
in the winds of industry, I can’t take much more –
so many nostalgic souls waiting or cursing,
standing up, I have become part of it;
the scent of petrol in the wind and the roar of machines
what kind of sight is this what kind of story
we are cursing today, could today become yesterday, something to yearn for?
Oh, farm work till noon and the afternoon industry, what is the difference?
Our earth, awarding the toil of mankind, what is left of her, “moaning
in September, crying in vain“, drowning herself in her tears
Oh, I have no way of knowing your sadness or weeping
inside the concrete and steel, oh, be still
your black figure reflected on water
like a shimmering horse running by, leaving its shadow on the machine
five years of sounds from metal machines, fate of an ant
they always keep moving, from the interior to the coast
from countryside to the cities (Nanchong, Dongguan, Steel City metal factory
operator, cut-off fingers, canteen cooking lady over thirty
in a tryst with a guard) a bus leaving carrying endless
assembly lines, thinking of Africa, a trap far away
it is only a metal tool from black Africa
the wind will blow you in which direction, in a moment demolished by time
Dimly I’m seeing vehicles carrying youth I have lost
People and villages, caught in the clamor of urbanization
standing there helpless, uprooted crops, trees
and the ditch interrupted by sand and rocks, time deformed
shutting its wings. Thunder rolls down from the tin roof.
Silence opens mysterious palm prints to the heavens.
Constellations tumbling into grey yellow streetlights
childhood swoops down and attacks from the branches
Tangled-up morning glory, tangled up time
white flower buds crisscross with guesswork in rouge
their twigs are bent. Standing at a pass gazing,
the wind from afar, blowing on the horizon,
this is spring, stopping in childhood.
We have these winds, in the elm branches, in peach blossom rouge
there’s a soul immersed in the endless glow
of the sun filled up with dust, it is old.
Many people standing in the dust, waiting
hiding in a tree-covered avenue of history,
they are forgotten. If they are lit up some day
by a focusing pair of pupils, cast again by enlarged shots in slow motion,
burn marks of memory carved into the dark of their stories.
So many people in vehicles moved to other places
so many people in vehicles arrive at this village
we are looking for a place that is farther and wider than our home town
its previous inhabitants have gone far away, they have left just like us
maybe there is a village or a city waiting for them
like for us, welcoming them
and another vehicle bringing us back when we’re old, and depressed,
how long will it be, striking my roots
so this will be my hometown, filled with
black rubble, demolished buildings, youth
thrown away by myself, bad luck, days of yore
are now ruined, blown to bits, gradually dispersed in this body.
My thoughts growing old day by day, and my will, this tired shell;
loose bones soaking for long in this world of ruins
I have to surrender, as my blood moves more slowly each day
I am growing old, repeating the same moves
in the same speed at the same time
teeth slackened, eyes blurred, and those solid ideals
shaken by time growing old, in the days that remain
fear and unhappiness amassed in my body and soul
in this instant, I have no hopes for a place in the distance
that would receive me. Time is cruelly cutting me down,
I am going to spend my remaining years in this city. I look for a patch of wild earth
between the buildings, to plant my green life
in a tiny corner, to keep half a finger
of distance to this ruined world. Time sculpting a spurious moment:
spring, fleeting flash in the twigs.

Variationen über ein Dorf – Zheng Xiaoqiong, 2008-2010
Wind und Richtung, Hand und Handteller. Oder du, er:
Wer ist wer, wer bin ich? Oh! Wer ist er?
Woher kommst du? Wohin gehst du? Oh!
Wieso kommst du von dort? Warum gehst du dorthin?
Du wirst vergessen, von der verhedderten Zeit. Oh, von der
verwickelten Welt wird dir vergeben. Deine stürmischen
Wünsche, wohin treiben sie dich, gelegentlich,
wenn die untergehende Sonne den ganzen Lastwagen
erfüllt, steht am Fluss ein weinendes Pferd. In seinen
ein entlaufenes Pferd senkt den Kopf in die riesige untergehende Sonne;
“das lange vergebliche Stöhnen im September”. Es ertränkt sich noch in seinen Tränen;
im Stahlbeton, oh, sei still
So viele Menschen in Wagen unterwegs in andere Orte;
brachgelegen, zertrümmert, in meinem Körper allmählich verflogen:
Mein Tag um Tag älteres Denken und Streben, ermüdete Hülle;
in diesem Augenblick.
2008–2010,1. Teil von 3. http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_45a57d300100m5ld.html
The first line of the poem contains two pronouns, “you” and “he” or “him”. “Wind and [its] direction, hand and palm, or also you, him/ who is who, who am I? Oh, who is he?” These questions receive no direct answers all through the three long parts of the poem. There is no definite male character; there is no character with a name at all. There are factory workers, coming from the countryside. There is a female cook at one time, making out with a guard in the canteen. And there is a horse that comes up several times. The horse is an important image, right from the beginning. In the original, there are many “it”, always the same impersonal pronoun, the character for things and abstract entities, also used for animals. The pronunciation is the same as for “he” or “she”, because there used to be only one personal pronoun in classical Chinese. In German, I have to use “es”, the impersonal pronoun. In English, animals are often referred to in the male gender by default. So it would be natural to call the horse “he”, although later one could also speak of “it”. When I first encountered the horse, I thought of Mayakovski and Nietzsche. The horse is a powerful image, a central character, close to the “I” in the poem. The whole poem is about alienation, the worker, the village, the countryside; they are all irreparably damaged, taken apart, rebuilt, alienated, strange. The speaker identifies with the horse, but as the poem goes on, it becomes unclear, at least to me, what each “it” is referring to. “I have become part of it”, I have to use “it” here, because it probably means the machine.
Second part:
All those doors opening their mouths, wounds of memory
All die Tuerfluegel, geoeffnete Muender, erinnerte Wunden
Bones lit by the past
Knochen im Licht der Vergangenheit
In this village, about to be reconstructed
in diesem Dorf das neu gebaut wird
Pretty above the reeking canal
Ein schönes Bild überm Gestank des Kanals
A window towards another window
ein Fenster mit Blick auf ein Fenster
Those people at the window looking at the street
On the street, I am gazing up at those windows
Mosaics on the walls leave no trace of an era
gekachelte Waende hinterlassen keine Spur irgendeiner Epoche
History’s disappeared, standing under some banyan tree
geloeschte Geschichte steht unterm Feigenbaum
Nursery rhymes and allusions are lost without trace
Zitate und Reime sind spurlos verschwunden
No sparkling eyes fly through the sky
es fliegen keine leuchtenden Augen am Himmel
Leaves glide through the air. Sitting at the door of the hairdresser’s,
Prostitutes are playing cards, their white-powdered faces
kartenspielende Prostituierte, ihre weißgepuderten Wangen
Their lipsticks and perfumes, swept into the memory of six year old kids
Ah, commercialized childhood of laboring women
oh, kommerzialisierte Kindheit der Kinder der Arbeiterinnen
Anachronistic verse venturing into a sleepy reality
History told on a single day, all those heroes and commoners
Have all become bodies at some quiet spot, they’re not sad anymore
And also not blinding, a car going by, outside is the rain
Splashing the rust on these bones, they were this village’s owners.
Someone’s struck down singing in the rain, flowers asleep at the sill
Still and retreating into curly green dreams
im Stillen zurueckgezogen in gruenere Traeume
I and the sun living back to back, the clammy wind
Stroking the window, lichee trees from the yard lift their heads
Stretching into my cold clammy room to the books on the shelf
And shake hands with allusions and scenes in the pages
Dreaming up each other’s past and their traces
einander sich Herkunft erfindend und Spuren
Beds in the waves, or a bookshelf
das Bett in den Wogen, oder Bücherregale
Green from the waves flashing through dawn
And I am spied upon by beings floating in bodies
All those eyes growing out from my flesh
die Augen, die wachsen aus meinem Fleisch
Pupils like blades flashing through green
Pupillen wie blitzende Blätter im leuchtenden Grün
Third part:

There are some attention-grabbing deadlines
in this article but I don’t know if I see all of them middle to heart.
There is some validity but I’ll take hold opinion until I look into it
further. Good article , thanks and we would
like more! Added to FeedBurner as well
