About Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise for the whole body that focuses on developing core strength and flexibility to improve posture, support the spine and build strength, stamina and coordination.

One of the great features of Pilates, and what differentiates it from many other fitness classes, is that all of the exercises can be adapted or modified to suit almost anyone, so each person in the class can work to their own level. Whether you are a sportsperson looking to develop core strength, coordination and control to assist with your other sports; or someone just getting started with exercise, you will benefit from Pilates.

Lifestyles can take their toll on your body, and in particular your posture. Factors such as desk-based jobs; hours spent in the car; spending long periods of time using a laptop, smartphone or a tablet; working on your feet all day; lifting and carrying babies and children; or simply the effects of ageing – all of these things can gradually alter your natural posture and the way your hold yourself, putting more pressure on the spine.  Pilates helps to redress the balance and restore optimal posture, which in return eases aches and pains.

About Me

My  name is Emily Harwood, and I live in Hughenden Valley with my husband, our two children and two mischievous cats.

I first tried Pilates at the suggestion of my mother, who had taken it up in retirement and loved it!  I was soon converted, after finding that it helped me not only to tone up and improve my posture after being stuck at a desk all day, but to unwind and de-stress after a long day in the office and long commute.

In fact I was so impressed with the results it gave, that I decided to leave my job as a lawyer in the City and re-train as a Pilates teacher, so I could help others to discover the benefits of and fun in practising Pilates.

I hold the following Pilates qualifications:

  • VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork;
  • Certificate in Instructing Pilates with Small Equipment; and
  • VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Designing Antenatal and Postnatal Pilates Programmes.

When I’m not teaching, I make chalkboard signs for local businesses and volunteer at Hughenden Valley Village Shop. In my spare time I love to practice drawing, calligraphy and hand-lettering, as well as going for walks and pub lunches in the beautiful Chilterns countryside.
