Team in Training

For a third year, I am training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training.  The endurance training is powered by athletes who work towards raising awareness and funds for blood cancer research.  On a local level, the Fairbanks chapter is training to run the Equinox Marathon in Fairbanks, Alaska on September 21, 2019.

This year, I will run the marathon in its entirety, a task daunting still, but a challenge I am ready to accept.  I will be running many miles to accomplish this, partly because I want to give back to a community that has found a way to support me.  I was diagnosed with a horrific disease, acute myeloid leukemia, in 2011.  I persevered, through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, and I am here to tell my story.  I can run again.  The Equinox Marathon coincides precisely with the weekend when I was first diagnosed, eight years ago, a time I will never forget.  This year, lifted by the mission of a team that has dedicated itself to eradicate the pain cancer causes, I will try to run the distance.  I want to do so for so many of us who are on the verge of giving up or who are still waiting for their donor cells or for those who have lost the battle.  I have been given a second chance in life.  I want to make it count
