Books

As of May 31st, 2018, which would have been my mother’s 104th birthday, I shall be keeping at least a partial record of what I have been reading in a new location.

Et maintenant, enfin… Proust.

Last Waltz in Vienna A moving account of the predicament of two Jewish families during the “finis Austriae”. Clive James regards this book highly enough to suggest that it be read even before Stefan Zweig’s “Die Welt von gestern”, which is an extraordinary work written from memory in exile. Next on my list is Egon Friedell’s “Kulturgeschichte der Neuzeit”. Such men as Zweig and Friedell must never be forgotten, lest the circumstances that led each to take his own life be permitted to uglify the world once more.
