Dear Science, Medicine & Engineering Students;

My name is Dr Marc Jurblum, I’m a member of the Australasian Society of Aerospace Medicine Space Life Sciences Subcommittee. I’m writing you all this email to share with you the building momentum of the global human spaceflight programs, and the Australian opportunities in the next 6 months to explore the Space sector as part of your future careers.

NASA, China & Russia all have plans for a manned Mars mission in the 2030s and 2040s and in 2015. Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Head of the European Space Agency (which offered membership to Australia) declared plans to begin planning a “lunar village” for a similar timeframe. In his talk, Director Wörner said “The future of spaceflight is too much for any one country. Our progress will need to be one of international cooperation.” Demonstrating that in order to function, a foundation of the Space Sector is the ongoing development of international and multicultural cooperation. Australian scientists & business start-ups have been enthusiastic participants in this new period of growth, and the Government has responded to this in recent months by starting an inquiry into an Australian Space Agency.

Space research brings together development of self-sustaining eco-systems and sustainability technology, a need for a deeper understanding of human health, physiology and psychology and many other fields from biotechnology, human-centred engineering, Earth sciences, Space Law and NewSpace commercial spaceflight. With commercially run crew flights beginning this year, reusable rocket technology and Mars Analogue Studies like HISEAS and MDRS being run around the world, the opportunities in Space Physiology, Biomedical technology, Engineering and Space Medicine are coming thick and fast.

Having set the world stage, we are keen to invite you all to several upcoming opportunities here in Australia to check out as you begin your careers and consider a role as part of the “Mars Generation”.

ASAM Humans in Space: Challenges for Exploration – Space Medicine Course

An introductory course in Space Medicine run by the Australasian Aerospace Medical Society (ASAM) with guest lecturers from NASA and the Australian Antarctic Division’s Polar Medicine Department.

The public lecture is running alongside the HiS course, intended to introduce scientists, students and healthcare professionals to extreme environment medicine and encourage careers and research interests across Space, Aerospace and Polar Medicine in Australia.

We are incredibly lucky that this course’s main faculty include Astronaut/Physician Dr Robert Thirsk, Physiologist Gilles Clement who has run human physiology experiments on every space station since Russian Salyut in the 1980s and literally wrote the textbook on Space Medicine and NASA space systems engineer & lecturer Angie Buckley of the International Space University.

The course is intended to give insight into careers in space medicine and space physiology research and will touch on Australian projects such as Australian Antarctic Division Telemedicine, sleep physiology in extreme environments and spacesuit design. There will also be a broad discussion of the next few decades of Space Medicine research supporting Human Mars spaceflight in the 2030-40s.

The course is quite expensive for students so those interested may contact ASAM to inquire about student scholarship rates which may be available. I have attached the PDF flyer for the course.

With hundreds of talks applicable to all fields from Life Sciences to Engineering, Space Law, Commercial companies and Astronomy/Earth Sciences. Recently announced, Elon Musk of SpaceX will be presenting his Mars Transport System v2 plan for the early 2030s at the conference this year.

The International Space University, based in Strasbourg, France has a longstanding reputation for its involvement with NASA, the European Space Agency and Russia’s ROSCOSMOS.

The SHSSP program is an intensive, five week, live-in experience in Adelaide at the University of South Australia Mawson Lakes campus based on the international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary educational philosophy for which the International Space University (ISU) is renowned. It involves participants from all over the world including undergraduates, researchers and young professionals.
