Helen Hazon – Nature #3

Animals

Inspiration – the life and work of the honey bee.

The second pair of quilts in my Nature series focus on animals.

Again, a very broad topic so I have selected one important animal to represent the whole Kingdom – the honey bee. Bees, and other insects, visit flowers to collect nectar and/or pollen to feed themselves and their young. These visits to flowers bring about pollination and hence seed and fruit formation – food sources for many animals including humans.

My quilt design shows the honey bee herself – it’s only the female workers that visit flowers for nectar and pollen. I’ve included a diagram of a very special dance that she performs to tell other bees in her colony where they can go to find good sources of food. This is known as the “waggle dance” and shows how very clever these little animals really are. The hexagonal structures are built as brood chambers where eggs develop into adult bees and also as a storage area for honey within the hive.

The quilt is made from cotton fabrics with rayon thread for embroidery. The quilting is in fine nylon thread and the bee’s wings are nylon net. I have also used Inktense pencils.
