Happy Labor Day – the last hurrah of summer sun and fun.
A good day for hoots and rainbows.
And then back to school. Back to work.
Many of us forget the history of Labor Day. That is was observed in 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York. After several people were killed by U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Cleveland made reconciliation with the labor movement a top political priority. “Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.[2]……….. All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.” from Wikipedia
For some, it’s a dreaded day because of sentence #3. Actually, it’s the day after that’s dreaded. Morale and productivity may be in the gutter. We can let it stay there or lead the way out.
What if we use Labor Day as a reminder?
Of the privilege we have to work.
To have jobs.
To challenge ourselves with goals.
To search for our pots of gold.
To achieve.
To contribute.
And a reminder to keep all of that in perspective.
To take care of ourselves by taking time for rest.
To take care of each other by encouraging time for rest.
To know when it’s time to slide down the rainbow.
Or to hoot a few hoots.
On Labor Day for sure.
Plus any other time we find ourselves not giving a hoot.
P.S. How do you hoot? Hoot if I know…that’s up to the hooter.
