so what’s new? A cardboard record player?
I found this amazing gadget amongst boxes of South African 78’s in a dusty garage. Manufactured in South Africa in the late 60’s, early 70’s, originally sold or probably given out as a promotion for a certain product. Cardtalk plays 78’s with a stylus of unknown origin, certainly not diamonds….I had never seen such a wonderful record player. These players were not developed to play music really, they were primarily manufactured for language courses, instruction or children stories. With printed instructions in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa on how to play the record.
A collectable souvenir from the past I thought. But guess what? Beginning of this year, a Vancouver based company launched a succesful promotion campaign with…a cardboard record player.
A cardboard record player created as a mail promotion has become a chart-topping success for Vancouver-based sound design company GGRP. The six inch record in a corrugated cardboard mailer sleeve folds into a make-shift, human-powered player which, when turned using a pencil, transmits vibrations through the needle and amplifies via cardboard corrugations.
