The Hangover formula has proven a success for director Todd Phillips, who will deliver an epic second sequel to his lucrative comedy this summer. Now one person associated with the series is hoping to strike gold with his own film, and the premise sounds very familiar.
According to THR, Hangover 2 screenwriter Scot Armstrong will helm Search Party, a Gold Circle comedy he co-wrote with Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller. Armstrong – who worked with Phillips on previous hits, such as Old School and Road Trip – will also produce the film, along with Paul Brooks (Pitch Perfect), Neal Moritz (21 Jump Street), and Ravi Nandan (Hesher).
Search Party marks the directorial debut for Armstrong, and based on its description, he isn’t breaking away from his usual material. The film follows two friends Evan and Jason, who try to reunite their buddy Nardo with his estranged fiance, whom they scared off at the altar. When Nardo is carjacked and left naked and broke in Mexico, they begin a series of misadventures south of the Rio Grande. It’s nothing new, but audiences who enjoyed the raucous antics of the Wolf Pack will surely find it appealing.
It was also reported that Universal recently picked up the rights to Search Party from Gold Circle. The studio is planning a late 2014 release date for the film.
