MetaVerse Episode 35: Earservice

Good plot to go along with plots & backstories

spring13-jrowEcchi talk on this ep of MetaVerse as Fosh, Highway and I talk about ecchi shows we believe are entertaining for more reasons than just the plots and backstories, and then we kind of trash on some toward the final minutes. There’s also some post-show banter about Titan, Servant x Service & AnoHana, so stay tuned after the closing music for bonus chatter.

FYI: This was recorded Friday, September 20th, so there are no end-of-series spoilers for any of the discussed series.

Kaji Yuki should always do comedy and ecchi roles. Or murderous side characters (looking forward to see Valvrave in a few weeks!) I should also mention his layed back role as Subaru in Ro-Kyu-Bu; a very underestimated program.

More Koneko is a better DXD…

Crap, I only got about ten minutes in, will have to listen to more later tonite.

High School DxD is the best ecchi show in my opinion because it strikes a perfect balance in its genres. No matter how much fanservice is produced, it doesn’t interfere with story. Rather it adds more to it because all the girls are moving on Issei. Having Rias concerned about the other girls wanting Issei is a nice touch as it’s obvious she loves him but she’s all caught up in her status as his master. So far this year, Yuki Kaji’s best roles are Issei and Attack on Titan’s Eren.

I marathoned Freezing (One of many shows getting marathoned during Summer for the sequels in Fall) and like it a lot so I’m definitely looking forward to Freezing Vibration especially when the finale to last season was very open ended. What I think the show wanted to do was establish how volatile the school life for Pandoras is because other than social status, it’s about who’s the most powerful but that aspect was dwelled upon for ¾ of the series and almost blurring the main objective which is fighting the NOVA which ironically their DNA is the source of the Pandora’s power. With that out of the way, it’s a safe bet that that whole of Vibration will focus on fighting the NOVA. The studio sure took its sweet time animating it as well. The last season aired Winter 2011, almost three years ago. And since it was Jrow who gave us a hint about this show in one of the MetaFap posts, I wonder if he’ll come out of retirement and blog it exclusively.

The first season of Hyakka Ryouran was good with a solid story but the second one left much to desire despite having the girls all turn into Master Sumurais. The biggest weak point was the whole maid café aspect. Once that was over when they got enough money to save the dojo, it should have focused wholly on the face off against the Dark Samurais.

One series that could’ve done better was Senran Kagura. That series had so much unused potential even though there was one deadweight of a character.

The MetaFap posts may have taken a break for Summer but they’re coming back. So far, I’m aware of four incoming ecchi shows. Time to get back to work, guys. 😀

I Have to agree with my rival on all points, except for Freezing. I watched the first fifteen minutes and turned it off. It just didn’t have anything to it that attracted me. Same with IS, but that at least got a full episodes worth from me.

      Yes, Metafap has been missed….

      • Highway says:

Freezing was one of the shows I watched early on in my anime watching, so I didn’t have a lot to compare it to. I thought there was some interesting relationship stuff in the series, and it had an uncommon way to make the super-overpowered person actually somewhat of an underdog. And a lot of the concepts were intriguing. I just felt that too much of that stuff fell by the wayside in the interest of people beating up Bridget to teach her a lesson (which she never learned).

    • Jrow says:

I will be coming out of writing retirement to cover Vibration for MetaFap. 🙂

      • BlackBriar says:

There was a feeling that would be the case. I look forward to your Freezing Vibration posts.

  3. KLACMAN says:

well give s2 of Freezing coming this fall & yet there also that female wrestling anime aka sekai de ichiban tsuyoku naritai to watch

can we just say YES YES YES for it.

    • BlackBriar says:

I’m looking forward to Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai! not only because it’s a sports anime about female wrestlers but for the all star female seiyuus voicing the characters. Ayana Taketatsu, Kana Asumi, Rina Satou, Haruka Tomatsu, Eri Kitamura and Kana Hanazawa. HELL YES!!!

      • skylion says:

You know, I’m looking forward to that show as well, mostly because you are grooving on it so much.

      • Highway says:

It’s definitely racking up the voice talent. You too can hear all those different seiyuu crying out…

(I refer to the PV that was made)

        • skylion says:

In the West, Professional Wrestling is just a sad little affair. Back in the day, it used to be just amped up slam time, with some good testosterone driven soap opera every now and again. Now it’s just a farce of that soap opera with a bit of wrasslin’ every now and again. Sad.
And the lady wrestling is just so painfully obvious in what it is trying to sell. I’d really like them to at least try to lie to me a little.

So an anime about an idol turned wrestler? I just have to check that out.

    • Foshizzel says:

I hated s1 of Freezing because the main character was so ANNOYING I hated how she acted but w/e I know why she was that way but still…anyway Jrow got me excited to see what happens in s2 so I will be watching xDD

  4. […] the third best series of summer (slightly eking out Servant x Service), and as we talked about in Metaverse 35, probably the best combination of heavy ecchi fanservice and plot in anime. I love the measured […]
