The online giant has announced that it added 10 million new Prime members during the period.

Amazon declined to reveal the total number of Prime members, a figure that the company has long held back from the public. Amazon Prime membership, which includes free two-day shipping on items sold directly from Amazon and unlimited Prime Instant Video streaming, costs per year.

The top selling movies during the holidays on Amazon were Guardians of the Galaxy and Maleficent. The top streamed titles were Hunger Games: Catching Fire and “Alpha House Season 2.”

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said the following about Prime:

“We are working hard to make Prime even better and expanding the recently launched Prime Now to additional cities in 2015,”

Are Prime members opting for free shipping or Prime Instant Video streaming?

It would nice if Amazon specified.

Amazon Prime members get both 2 day free shipping and Instant video streaming for only $99.00! We got rid of Direct TV. We have a Roku 3 now. Saving a lot of money now.

How many of those signed up for the 30 day free trial for Xmas shopping and drop it now? How many of the 10 million are actually paying the $99 fee would be a much better measure.

I would consider joining, but there is just too much overlap with Netflix. Other than that, the two day shipping is something that I would like, but I simply don’t order enough. Doubling up the expense of my video on demand just isn’t worth it. Besides, Netflix has such great original programming, Amazon just can’t compete.

When it was $79 I had prime for both reasons it was cheaper than netflix (even though I kept that as well) but the 2 day free shipping (when it get to you in 2 days) is awesome……this past year I did not have prime and shipping costs added up to almost $50…. If they would come up with a deal where I pay the difference and get prime for the year I would jump on it again…but right now I cant afford the added increase….some things had to give and prime was the first luxury that went…hbo was the second….

Now that Redbox has went to 1.50 a movie it is time to get Netflix and say goodbye to Redbox. Redbox was a deal at 1.00 a movie even though it cost about 4.00 in gas to go get and return your movies when gas was 4.00 a gal. Now that gas is 2.50 it still cost 2.50 plus 1.50 per movie and their are not that good of movies that are being made. Free TV and streaming Netflix is much cheaper per movie and I don’t have to go out in the cold to pick up or return the next day.

I was one of the 10 million, but I dropped it after the trial period, and i’m sure most of the others did. Not near as good as netflix, and the only time I use the free shipping is in December during their lightning deals.

I have Prime and love it. I use it for both streaming and shipping. I do a lot of Amazon Prime shopping for the holidays. Plus now that Amazon has introduced Amazon Smile which allows you to pick a charity to have a percentage of your qualifying purchases donated to (and they even have a local charity that is very important to me) I plan on doing a majority of my online purchasing with them which makes the benefit even greater. I also like being able to purchase the latest episodes of my favorite shows the day after they air so I don’t have to wait for Netflix to get them. Also even though I have to purchase some of the seasons I like that Amazon has full TV series available unlike Netflix who only picks and chooses certain ones (at least a lot of the shows I watch).
