Nobody president everyone cool square

In order to free up Open Mike and Daily Review for other conversations we are asking that all discussion, posting of links etc on the US election go in this daily dedicated thread rather than OM or DR.

The usual rules of good behaviour apply (see the Policy).

There will continue to be author-written posts on the US election as well, usual rules apply there too.

Looks like the Clintessential Liar is home and hosed. What a disaster for the whole world. The American Nightmare surpasses the American Dream.
We will all rue the day Bernie was eliminated by the DNC… he was the only hope the world had to put the brakes on the mad American Military Machine.

    • left_forward 1.1

Looks like the psychopath will be creamed. What a relief for the whole world, particularly, women, Mexicans, and African Americans.

      • Garibaldi 1.1.1

Hey left forward ,I am not a Trump supporter. I have steadfastly maintained that neither Clinton nor Trump are suitable as President. And I do not subscribe to the lesser of two evils option. They are both evil. Evil is evil no matter which way you look at it.

        • dukeofurl 1.1.1.1

An absurd statement. Are you a defrocked minister who thinks their role is to seek out evil ?

        • Andre 1.1.1.2

That argument got a good workout in 2000. How d’you feel about how that turned out?

        • left_forward 1.1.1.3

I can see Garibaldi that you preferred Bernie, and I understand that, but this contest is now between Clinton and Trump. So if you do not subscribe to the lesser of evils, then which way do you go? Abstaining would be such a cop out for someone who holds such an damming opinion of Clinton!

      • Lanthanide 1.1.2

A relief for pretty much everyone except uneducated heterosexual white men.

    • dukeofurl 1.2

The voters eliminated Bernie. he just didnt get enough votes. You will know of course that the primaries are run by the state governments.
Where Bernie did well was the undemocratic caucuses which are run by the state democratic parties with a lot of local control at the city/county level.

So much for ‘The DNC’ which doesnt run much at at all ( The convention mostly)
The US has a very decentralised system.

    • McFlock 1.3

Sanders was hardly eliminated – I have hopes he’ll be in Clinton’s cabinet, and if he isn’t then he’s still in Senate and will be applying huge amounts of pressure.

He didn’t win the nomination, but he gained enough support to push hard on policy.

Thanks for putting that up xanthe – it is a good, sober-minded summary of the central issues. This quote captures it in a nutshell: “We’ve tried sane, now let’s try crazy,” is basically his campaign’s working motto. The promise to be a bull in a china shop is part of his demagogue’s appeal. Some of his more eloquent supporters have analogized a vote for Trump to storming the cockpit of a hijacked plane, with the likelihood of a plane crash entirely factored in.

But passing on the plane-crash candidate doesn’t mean ignoring the dangers of his rival.

The dangers of a Hillary Clinton presidency are more familiar than Trump’s authoritarian unknowns, because we live with them in our politics already. They’re the dangers of elite groupthink, of Beltway power worship, of a cult of presidential action in the service of dubious ideals. They’re the dangers of a recklessness and radicalism that doesn’t recognize itself as either, because it’s convinced that if an idea is mainstream and commonplace among the great and good then it cannot possibly be folly.

A broader and more nuanced view than most of the Clinton Foundation’s Morocco problem.

A bit bizarre , as when she is President, she will absolutely be raising money for the the next election in 4 years. And people will pay for that access as they do for every President.
Its called the US election fund raising system, which is at its height even now.
Raising money for a major world charity- such a good idea , more world leaders should do it

    Voting fraud continued
    http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/concern-grows-over-soros-linked-voting-machines/

“The U.K.-based Smartmatic company posted a flow-chart on its website that it had provided voting machines for 16 states, including important battleground states like Florida and Arizona. Smartmatic Chairman Mark Malloch-Brown is a former U.N. official and sits on the board of Soros’ Open Society Foundations. Since the story first broke, the flow-chart has disappeared from Smartmatic’s website, raising further questions about the real status of the Soros-tied voting equipment and whether it is truly being deployed in U.S. elections.”

    • The New Student 6.2

This flowchart graphic thingy, which the Daily Caller managed to retain.

Not much to it I would have thought? the page hasn’t changed much so what’s the beef?

Naturally I had to check out the rest of the Smartmatic site. After seeing this Tweet from Smartmatic, I had trouble reconciling it with their statement:

“Smartmatic will not be deploying its technology in any U.S. county for the upcoming 2016 U.S. Presidential elections”

      Like, ehhh?

Mr. President voted in Cook County and a quick check of Verified Voting.org indicates only Sequoia (Dominion) products are in use here.

It seems that Smartmatic retained IP when it sold Sequoia in ’07, at least according to:
Somewhat itself (last paragraph); Wikipedia; and errm HuffPost

So, Smartmatic’s claim “our voting machines” seems to stem from ownership of Sequoia IP, which was presumably never transferred to Dominion Voting when they acquired Sequoia. Right-o, I think I understand that tweet now.

Further, it seems the shills have it somewhat right; sorta kinda Smartmatic equipment is being used in 16 states for the 2016 Presidential election. Are these Sequoia systems compromised? Will they benefit one candidate over another? Pffft, like any of us would really know. Judge for yourself!

Anyway, my actual point: Electronic voting in the US of A, and probably the world over, is an intriguing, hopeless, gloriously controversial muddle that was an enjoyable waste of an afternoon. Claim and counter-claim, thanks for playing the game.

PS. Using HTML tags for first time, don’t know if they came out ok, my writing is bad but I’m learning…trying to.

How David Fahrenthold of the Washington Post got interested in the Trump Foundation dodgy dealings

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/was-the-debate-dodge-trump-s-undoing

    • joe90 10.1

      More dodgy dealings.

A Financial Times investigation has found evidence that one Trump venture has multiple ties to an alleged international money laundering network. Title deeds, bank records and correspondence show that a Kazakh family accused of laundering hundreds of millions of stolen dollars bought luxury apartments in a Manhattan tower part-owned by Mr Trump and embarked on major business ventures with one of the tycoon’s partners.

      Trump and the Kazakh connection.

  10. joe90 11

    Possible dodgy campaign financing, too.

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is facing a fundraising scandal after a Telegraph investigation exposed how key supporters were prepared to accept illicit donations from foreign backers.

Senior figures involved with the Great America PAC, one of the leading “independent” groups organising television advertisements and grassroots support for the Republican nominee, sought to channel $2 million from a Chinese donor into the campaign to elect the billionaire despite laws prohibiting donations from foreigners.

In return, undercover reporters purporting to represent the fictitious donor were assured that he would obtain “influence” if Mr Trump made it to the White House.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/10/24/exclusive-investigation-donald-trump-faces-foreign-donor-fundrai/

  11. happynz 12

I could’ve voted, but I’ve left it too late. Oh well, I can’t find any enthusiasm for any of the presidential candidates nor any of the down-ballot troughers either.

Next year’s NZ elections may also prove a challenge to participate in if my last efforts at overseas voting go similar.

  12. rhinocrates 13

A Washington Post article on the Republican Party coming to realise it’s mistake.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2016/10/24/republicans-told-their-voters-that-politics-is-inherently-evil-that-stuck-them-with-trump/?postshare=5191477363871052&tid=ss_fb&utm_term=.6f20a32355c6

They’ve succumbed to or exploited a cult of the outsider, a saviour figure from outside the system.

Today, if you want to know why Washington doesn’t work, it’s not the insiders that are the problem. They’re not the ones refusing to move legislation, or shutting down the government, or threatening to default on the national debt. It’s the outsiders, the Republicans elected in 2010 and after who came to Washington hoping to burn the place down.

When you spend all your time denigrating not only “Washington” but everything about politics — complex legislation, compromises, deal-making, substantive expertise — and instead make ridiculous promises of revolutionary change that can be accomplished just by listening to your gut and doing some Founding Father cosplay, you set yourself up for failure. And in the most extreme case, you nominate Donald Trump for president.

The Congress currently has historically low approval ratings (about or less than one sixth) for its perpetual gridlock and the blame for that an be squarely placed on the Republican majority leaders of House and Senate, John Boehner (replaced now by Paul Ryan after being exorcised by the Pope himself) and Mitch McConnell – the latter infamously claimed that the sole purpose of the Republicans was to ensure that Obama was a one-term President. That fixation on obstruction and the influx of uncompromising far right Tea Party types such as Ted Cruz (who is even more hated within the party hierarchy than Trump) has destroyed the reputation of Congress.

Personally, I’d rope in Newt Gingrich (failed to get the Republican nomination in the last election) and his introduction of a new, fanatically adversarial style of politics in the mid 1990s that achieved short-term victories and then led to the continuing dysfunction. Currently he’s a major Trump supporter (rumour has it that he’s been promised a high cabinet position in a Trump administration). If you look at his history, he’s a pretty horrible person on every level with a very inflated image of himself as a kind of radical visionary.

The overwhelming majority of Americans hate congress right now and part of the appeal of Trump as an “outsider” as opposed to Clinton the “insider” is that he’ll be some messianic figure to drive the money lenders from the temple.

    • The New Student 13.1

“…part of the appeal of Trump as an “outsider” as opposed to Clinton the “insider” is that he’ll be some messianic figure to drive the money lenders from the temple.”

Pretty much. And I don’t blame people for holding on to that thought.

      • xanthe 15.1.1

Oh yeah not the best source i agree. But still a valid point in this case. I do think the “russians are running wikileaks” is just unsubstantiated misdirection IMHO. And there will be a price to pay for It be it true or false

Comment from the HuffPo article below.

Let me get this straight: he takes small donor’s money…uses it to buy a ton of his books from the publisher…and then SELLS the books for nearly $200 on his website…BACK to the people who’s money he used to buy them.

Are Trump supportes reading this? He *hates* you. He’s *conning* you. Good God, wake up. The guy just 3 years ago was saying that illegal immigrants are wonderful and that nobody should deport them. He doesn’t *believe* any of the crap he’s saying. He’s *GRIFTING* you guys. Have some respect for yourself and crawl out of the self-reflective mirror dome you’re existing in that allows you to let this guy keep telling you want you want to hear, manipulate you into a hate frezy and clutch the fact that this guy is *playing* you. You’re literally paying for the *gold plated sinks* on his jet (look it up).
