Here is quite a rational commentary on US election (in my view)
Thanks for putting that up xanthe – it is a good, sober-minded summary of the central issues. This quote captures it in a nutshell: “We’ve tried sane, now let’s try crazy,” is basically his campaign’s working motto. The promise to be a bull in a china shop is part of his demagogue’s appeal. Some of his more eloquent supporters have analogized a vote for Trump to storming the cockpit of a hijacked plane, with the likelihood of a plane crash entirely factored in.
But passing on the plane-crash candidate doesn’t mean ignoring the dangers of his rival.
The dangers of a Hillary Clinton presidency are more familiar than Trump’s authoritarian unknowns, because we live with them in our politics already. They’re the dangers of elite groupthink, of Beltway power worship, of a cult of presidential action in the service of dubious ideals. They’re the dangers of a recklessness and radicalism that doesn’t recognize itself as either, because it’s convinced that if an idea is mainstream and commonplace among the great and good then it cannot possibly be folly.
A broader and more nuanced view than most of the Clinton Foundation’s Morocco problem.

A Financial Times investigation has found evidence that one Trump venture has multiple ties to an alleged international money laundering network. Title deeds, bank records and correspondence show that a Kazakh family accused of laundering hundreds of millions of stolen dollars bought luxury apartments in a Manhattan tower part-owned by Mr Trump and embarked on major business ventures with one of the tycoon’s partners.

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is facing a fundraising scandal after a Telegraph investigation exposed how key supporters were prepared to accept illicit donations from foreign backers.
Senior figures involved with the Great America PAC, one of the leading “independent” groups organising television advertisements and grassroots support for the Republican nominee, sought to channel $2 million from a Chinese donor into the campaign to elect the billionaire despite laws prohibiting donations from foreigners.
In return, undercover reporters purporting to represent the fictitious donor were assured that he would obtain “influence” if Mr Trump made it to the White House.

I could’ve voted, but I’ve left it too late. Oh well, I can’t find any enthusiasm for any of the presidential candidates nor any of the down-ballot troughers either.
Next year’s NZ elections may also prove a challenge to participate in if my last efforts at overseas voting go similar.

They’ve succumbed to or exploited a cult of the outsider, a saviour figure from outside the system.
Today, if you want to know why Washington doesn’t work, it’s not the insiders that are the problem. They’re not the ones refusing to move legislation, or shutting down the government, or threatening to default on the national debt. It’s the outsiders, the Republicans elected in 2010 and after who came to Washington hoping to burn the place down.
When you spend all your time denigrating not only “Washington” but everything about politics — complex legislation, compromises, deal-making, substantive expertise — and instead make ridiculous promises of revolutionary change that can be accomplished just by listening to your gut and doing some Founding Father cosplay, you set yourself up for failure. And in the most extreme case, you nominate Donald Trump for president.
The Congress currently has historically low approval ratings (about or less than one sixth) for its perpetual gridlock and the blame for that an be squarely placed on the Republican majority leaders of House and Senate, John Boehner (replaced now by Paul Ryan after being exorcised by the Pope himself) and Mitch McConnell – the latter infamously claimed that the sole purpose of the Republicans was to ensure that Obama was a one-term President. That fixation on obstruction and the influx of uncompromising far right Tea Party types such as Ted Cruz (who is even more hated within the party hierarchy than Trump) has destroyed the reputation of Congress.
Personally, I’d rope in Newt Gingrich (failed to get the Republican nomination in the last election) and his introduction of a new, fanatically adversarial style of politics in the mid 1990s that achieved short-term victories and then led to the continuing dysfunction. Currently he’s a major Trump supporter (rumour has it that he’s been promised a high cabinet position in a Trump administration). If you look at his history, he’s a pretty horrible person on every level with a very inflated image of himself as a kind of radical visionary.
